    A trenchant warning
Fossil Fuels, Global Warming and Democracy – Dr Kevin Taft
Global warming requires political and state institutions to confront the interests of the fossil fuel industry and reduce its size dramatically. This poses a triple jeopardy for any government that depends heavily on fossil fuel production.
First, the government must overcome its own dependence on royalties.
Second, the government must simultaneously challenge a dominant power, the fossil fuel industry.
Third, the government must face both of these challenges where political and state institutions have been moulded to support a mineral economy.
Governments are unlikely to take on this challenge and survive.
When democracy is caught between the needs of global warming and the demands of the fossil fuel industry, global warming is ignored and democracy is sacrificed.

Libraries under threat – by Michael Wilding
The last years of the nineteenth century saw a concerted move to educate people, provide free schooling, free libraries and universities of quality and distinction; the twenty-first century seems to be running a policy of dumbing down and surveillance. How many centres of Learning still have libraries?

Warm water flowing into Arctic Ocean
Over 90 percent of Earth’s energy imbalance has been going into the oceans, almost unnoticed by people keeping track of the temperatures in the atmosphere. The warmer ocean water is going through the Bering Strait and into the Chukchi Sea, Barents Sea, East Siberian Sea and worst of all, the Laptev Sea.

As everything is hotting up, both in CO2, in wars and in terror, I ask you to revisit the talk I gave in Katoomba in June last year. This is still relevant, indeed, more so as methane levels have been soaring all this year.

Russia Rejects Ukrainian Seperatists Bid To Join Russian Federation
Putin and Obama have regularly been in direct contact since February. Perhaps Putin’s declining to accept Ukrainian territory into Russia is part of an agreement between the two leaders in which Obama declines the urgings from his right for the US to provide weapons to the Ukrainian military. Maybe its a deal.

Israeli bulldozers enter border area in southern Gaza
Israel has severely limited Gaza’s imports and exports since 2006, also imposing a no-go buffer zone ranging from 500 to 1,500 meters from the border, an area encompassing 17 percent of Gaza’s total land. The siege has led to frequent humanitarian crises for Gazans, and the UN and various human rights groups have repeatedly called on Israel to lift it.

A penetrating analysis of the war we cannot win
The Folly Of Obama’s “War” On ISIS
In truth, the whole thing is a giant, pathetic farce. There will be no coalition, no strategy, no boots, no ISIS degradation, no gain in genuine safety and security for the American homeland. This is an utterly misbegotten war against an enemy that has more urgent targets than America, but a war which will nonetheless fire-up the already boiling cauldron of Middle Eastern tribal, religious and political conflicts like never before. There is no name for what Obama is attempting except utter folly.

Who will feed China? or “How China will starve the world”
China is a leading importer of grain and it imports a staggering 60 percent of all soybeans entering world trade—and it looks like this will continue. The problem is not population growth, but China’s rising affluence, which is allowing its population to move up the food chain, consuming more grain-intensive livestock, poultry, and farmed fish.
    http://www.earth-policy.org/blog/who_will_feed_china

    China’s shrinking grain harvest
After a remarkable expansion from 90 million tons in 1950 to 392 million tons in 1998, China’s grain harvest has fallen in four of the last five years—dropping to 322 million tons in 2003. This drop of 70 million tons exceeds the entire grain harvest of Canada. China is the first major grain-producing country where environmental and economic trends have combined to reverse the historical growth in grain production. This decline in a country that is home to more than one fifth of the world’s people will affect all of us. Moving grain from the United States to China on the scale that is needed will likely involve loading two or three ships every day. The long line of grain-laden ships that may soon stretch across the Pacific will bring these two countries closer together economically, but could become a major foreign policy challenge.

On the ground it’s hard to tell friend from foe
Some of the weaknesses of the air war are already apparent since Isis had evacuated its leaders, fighters and heavy equipment from buildings that were targeted. Its fighters avoid large gatherings and mix with the civilian population. The shock effect of being bombed will be the less because the Syrian air force has long been bombing rebel-held cities and towns.

Struggle Against ISIS Shields US Oil Grab – Jean Shaoul

South Australia sets 50% renewable energy target for 2025
“We took action at the local level, passing the nation’s first dedicated climate change legislation and were the first State with a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We have demonstrated in South Australia that, with the right policies and incentives, and with strong leadership and clear goals, even highly ambitious targets can be achieved and surpassed” – Premier Weatherill,

The Coming Climate Revolt – Chris Hedges
“If the response of the corporate state is repression rather than reform then our strategy and tactics must be different. We will have to cease appealing to the system. We will have to view the state as antagonistic to genuine reform. We will have to speak in the language of … revolution. We will have to carry out acts of civil disobedience that seek to cripple the mechanisms of corporate power. The corporate elites, blinded by their lust for profit and foolish enough to believe they can protect themselves from climate change, will not veer from the path towards ecocide unless they are forced from power. And this means beginning a titanic clash between our corporate masters and ourselves.” http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/the_coming_climate_revolt_20140921

“Always know that indifference is a militant thing. It batters down the walls of cities and murders the women and children amid the flames and the purloining of altar vessels. Mapping Global Carbon Emissions – for graph lovers!
The latest report on global carbon emissions released this week revealed that emissions will likely reach 40 billion tonnes this year. Growth continues to match the worst-case scenario modelled by the IPCC of between 3.2 and 5.4C by 2100.
    http://reneweconomy.com.au/2014/graph-of-the-day-mapping-global-carbon-emissions-95259
Do your own graph annually and see we could reach 2C in the next 20 years. This does not include Global Dimming (the almost equal amount of latent heat held in the system that is not yet affecting temperatures) nor any catastrophic tipping points (such as the sudden collapse of the ice sheets or eruptions of methane).

China announces targets on carbon emission cuts
The State Council announced that China is going to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with the level of 2005. However, with the expected doubling of GDP  this means the emissions in 2020 would be roughly the same as emissions now. For the world’s dirtiest economy standing still is not a reduction.

Iraq’s Economy Collapsing Under Pressure of Security Crisis:
One of the untold stories of the fighting in Iraq is the effect it is having upon the country’s economy: Almost two million internally displaced people, the loss of agricultural land in northern Iraq, foreign investors being scared off, the decline in trade, the collapse of several internal markets, and depleted financial reserves.

The Government’s Duty is to Protect the Public Interest – James Hansen
The United States was founded on the “self-evident” concept that all people have equal rights. Our Constitution’s purpose to “provide the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” implies obligations to the young and unborn. The Constitution assures that all people have “equal protection of the laws” and cannot be deprived of property without “due process” of law. These basic rights have global relevance because of substantial commonality of our Constitution with the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We aim to file a case against the government based squarely on these fundamental rights.

Entitled the Army Operating Concept, it defines the army’s strategic aim is to achieve “overmatch,” or “the application of capabilities or use of tactics in a way that renders an adversary unable to respond effectively.”
What do these words entail? In the case of a confrontation with another nuclear power, they encompass the implementation of a first-strike doctrine of mass annihilation. California Bans the Plastic Bag
After an insistent year-long campaign by environmental and citizen activists, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law legislation prohibits the use of single-use plastic bags in grocery and retail stores throughout the state, the first state in the nation to do so. Recognizing that removing plastic bags is only one strategy in the battle against wasteful consumption the bill also requires a surcharge  be levied on paper bags, compostable bags, and even reusable plastic bags.
It’s clear that there is a growing grass-roots movement to stop plastic pollution. The Plastic Pollution Coalition consists of over 380 NGOs, businesses, and prominent individuals from around the world, all dedicated  to bringing about a measurable reduction plastic shopping bags, plastic bottles, and straws being the most pervasive.

    A Manifesto for The Platform
There is a deep despair growing among good people as Trump promises to dismantle seventy years of Social Justice reforms and Environmental Safeguards. We have struggled and devoted our lives to implement worthwhile policies over our lifetimes, and they could be gone in a trice. I sense a forlorn hopelessness growing among us. Instead, The Platform offers an alternative. The Manifesto does not aim at concentrating all our efforts on fighting the polluters. We accept that so much heating is now built into the system that it does not matter what we do we will still suffer massive sea level rise and droughts, food scarcity and deaths. The Manifesto offers the positive message that we can make life better now and in the future, and that we, the people of Good Will, can succeed at this. The Manifesto for Our Platform offers the promise that we can do something, in place of succumbing to numbing despair.

    Flynn’s Wacky Worldview
Skepticism about Michael Flynn’s fitness for the position of national security adviser appears to be growing as more media outlets are paying closer attention to his (and his son’s) core beliefs about the world. Such scrutiny also appears to be more relevant since President-elect Trump may be relying more heavily on Flynn than on the CIA or other government intelligence agencies for his own assessment of world events.
It is the people who will be paying the price.
Trump will use the media to sugarcoat, falsify, distract, intimidate, glorify and massify the millions of people who believed, once upon a recent time, that he would “Make America Great Again.” As the profiteers of Wall Street and the war hawks blend with the corporate statists, the super-confident Trump is telling us what their products will be like and that he’ll be their salesman. If you think all this sounds predictable, there are going to be more than a few “black swans” (to use Nassim Taleb’s best-selling book title) coming over the horizon. It is time to mobilize as citizens in the Paul Revere mode.

The startling rise in oral cancer in men, and what it says about our changing sexual habits

Oral cancer jumped 61% from 2011 to 2015. HPV infects cells of the skin and the membranes that lines areas such as the mouth, throat, tongue, tonsils, rectum and sexual organs. Transmission can occur when these areas come into contact with the virus. HPV is a leading cause of cervical, vaginal and penile cancers. Younger men are more likely to perform oral sex than their older counterparts and to engage with more partners.

A Drive To Save Saharan Oases As Climate Change Takes a Toll

    Is Sustainability Destroying the Earth?
Only one-quarter of all consumption is by individuals. The rest is taken up by industry, agribusiness, the military, governments and corporations. Even if every one of us made every effort to reduce our ecological footprint, it would make little difference to overall consumption. If the lifestyle actions advocated really do keep our culture around for longer than it would otherwise, then it will cause more harm to the natural world than if no such action had been taken.
Saudi Arabia’s Glass: Half Empty or Half Full?
The people of Saudi Arabia have long accepted the bargain imposed by the founding king, Abdul Aziz al-Saud, in which they are disenfranchised but acquiesce in political powerlessness as the state provides them with security and a comfortable life. Now they are being asked to do more for themselves while the government does less, regardless of the price of oil.
Congress Votes To Give Jihadists Anti-aircraft Missiles
The Senate passed a bill that puts every American who travels by plane at risk.  It is among the stupidest pieces of legislation ever written – to provide shoulder-launched ground-to-air missiles to lunatic jihadists who will undoubtedly use them to take down American or Israeli jetliners. The argument that these Islamic militants are fully vetted is complete nonsense as both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have repeatedly shown. Rebel groups “have entered into battlefield alliances with the affiliate of al Qaida in Syria formerly known as al Nusra to render the phrase ‘moderate rebels’ meaningless.”

The “Golden Arches” Theory of Decline
One of the answers to Trump, Putin, Orban, Erdogan, Salvini, Duterte, Le Pen, Farage and the politics they represent is to rescue democracy from transnational corporations. It is to defend the crucial political unit that’s under assault by banks, monopolies and chainstores: community. It is to recognise that there is no greater hazard to peace between nations than a corporate model which crushes democratic choice
A degree by degree explanation of what will happen when the earth warms
At 2C temperature increase the hot European summer of 2003 will be the annual norm. Anything that could be called a heatwave thereafter will be of Saharan intensity. Even in average years, people will die of heat stress.
Beyond 2C billions of people will face an increasingly tough battle to survive. To find anything comparable we have to go back to the Pliocene 3m years ago. There were no continental glaciers in the northern hemisphere (trees grew in the Arctic), and sea levels were 25 metres higher than today’s. In this kind of heat, the death of the Amazon is as inevitable as the melting of Greenland.
Between 3 and 4C the summers get longer  as soaring temperatures reduce forests to tinderwood and cities to boiling morgues. Temperatures in the Home Counties could reach 45C – the sort of climate experienced today in Marrakech. Droughts will put the south-east of England on the global list of water-stressed areas, with farmers competing against cities for dwindling supplies from rivers and reservoirs. Air-conditioning will be mandatory for anyone wanting to stay cool and the abandonment of the Mediterranean will send even more people north to overcrowded refuges in Scandinavia.
Between 4 and 5C it will be an entirely different planet. Ice sheets have vanished from both poles; rainforests have burnt up and turned to desert; the dry and lifeless Alps resemble the High Atlas; rising seas are scouring deep into continental interiors. Even in Canada and Siberia summers may be too hot for crops to be grown away from the coasts. When temperatures were at a similar level 55m years ago in the early Eocene, alligators were living in the Arctic.
Between 5 and 6C at the end of the Permian, 251m years ago, 95% of species were wiped out. That episode was the worst ever endured by life on Earth, the closest the planet has come to ending up a dead and desolate rock in space. On land, the only winners were fungi that flourished on dying trees and shrubs.
Arctic Warming at Least Twice as Fast as Rest of World
Much of this melt was almost certainly driven by the record warm Arctic temperatures seen during 2016. And according to NOAA, this year shattered all previous high marks for Arctic heat by a big margin — hitting 3.5C warmer than 1900. Overall, this rate of warming is at least twice as fast as the rest of the globe.
Change in the Arctic this year was unlike any ever seen, scientists say
The annual Arctic Report Card documented air and sea-surface temperatures are higher, sea ice is sparser and more fragile and ocean waters absorbing more carbon, thus changing their chemistry to more acidic levels, while warming tundra is now expelling more carbon than it is drawing in from the atmosphere.
