ICAC inquiry ‘as big as Rum Corps’

Former NSW Premiers Morris Iemma and Nathan Rees to front the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Video will begin in 1 seconds.

Former premiers Morris Iemma and Nathan Rees have told a corruption inquiry that Upper House MP Eddie Obeid, together with former minister Joe Tripodi, effectively controlled the Parliamentary wing of the Labor party in NSW.

Mr Iemma and Mr Rees are giving evidence before an Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiry examining a series of coal exploration licences issued by former mining minister Ian Macdonald which, it alleges, conferred millions of dollars in profits on the Obeid family.

Both men said they would have expected the kind of decisions being taken by Mr Macdonald – to restrict invitations to a major coal mining tender and to not advertise its existence – to have been brought to cabinet or one of its sub-committees, something which Mr Macdonald failed to do.

Mr Rees said the first time he knew that Mr Obeid had a property which would collect a windfall gain from one of these coal leases was when he read about it in the Australian Financial Review.

Geoffrey Watson, SC, counsel assisting, asked Mr Iemma: “Because the [Obeid led] Terrigals could dominate the right wing caucus and the right wing caucus could dominate the whole of the caucus, it in effect gave the Terrigals a disproportionate control over the decisions of the Parliamentary party?”

“Yes,” Mr Iemma said. Mr Rees later agreed with this proposition.

Famously, when Mr Rees was removed as premier by his own party he gave a speech warning that his replacement would be a “puppet” of both Mr Obeid and Mr Tripodi.

Both former premiers told the ICAC that Mr Obeid lobbied intensively to have the former planning minister, Frank Sartor, removed and replaced by Mr Macdonald. Mr Obeid told them, they said, that Mr Sartor was giving insufficient attention to property development “proponents”.

It has been revealed before ICAC that the Obeid family had extensive property dealings across Sydney and the state during the period in which Mr Obeid was in Parliament.

    Hi Neville

“Business as usual” would end long before 4 degrees C, let alone 6 degrees C.

Many people expect “accurate” predictions of climate states, temperatures and sea level rise. Most scientists will not issue such predictions as the atmosphere/ocean/biosphere system is far too complex and transient reversals are more than likely (such as transient cooling of the North Atlantic due to Greenland ice melt water).

It is the extent of the feedbacks (from fires, methane, ice/water albedo effect) that will determine the temperatures at any particular point.

I find it bizarre that so many pin their forecasts on the end-21st century – as if there is not expectation/hope our grandchildren and their children will live beyond this point !

It is sufficient to say the trends are extremely worrying.

    Hi Andrew.

This material put out by Climate Code Red may well be correct.
However I am careful with items Dr. Spratt issues.
No one can accurately determine what global temps will be by 2050
or 2100 or what the sea-level rises will be. Their is a great deal of
speculation that may not be in accord with scientific reports.

This has caused many problems with coastal councils and planning
departments in respect to existing and future development.
A rise of 1 metre would cause severe problem, if as Dr Hansen reports
a 5 meter or higher rise would be a catastrophe.
For your comments please. I will not distribute material which may not
meet the existing scientific criteria, which could alter if there is an increase
in Icemelts causing a reappraisal of current reports.

    Regards
    Neville

Greens highlight reef coal project worries

By Megan Hendry, ABCNovember 13, 2012, 9:27 am

Greens Senator Larissa Waters says there is a high level of concern among the Capricorn Coast community in central Queensland about plans to “industrialise” the Great Barrier Reef.

Ms Waters held a public meeting last night in Yeppoon, north of Rockhampton, about the future of the reef and will meet fishermen and local businesses in Gladstone tonight.

She says several coal port projects are proposed in the Fitzroy and Keppel Bay area and the community is strongly opposed to the plans.

“They’re worried about all the dredging impact on the local environment,” she said.

“They’re worried about the turtle rookery and the snubfin dolphin and worried about their own health with these coal dust concerns.

“People are worried that the Government doesn’t seem to be listening to the people’s concerns about the future of the reef.”

  • ‘Satisfied’ whistleblower weighs future in the force

End of his career!!!!  He has had the courage to force a Royal Commission into this entire deplorable practice. He deserves every accolade possible including an award for his tenacity in pursuing this issue for many years. After listening to callers on talkback radio last night and this morning I believe he has achieved what had been considered impossible and has proved beyond doubt the extent of this issue and how it has affected peoples lives.

A senior detective who blew the whistle on an alleged police cover-up of sex abuse in the Catholic Church said he had received threatening messages on police letterhead since speaking out on an issue that he acknowledged would end his career in the force.

But after Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a sweeping royal commission into child sex abuse on Monday, Detective Inspector Peter Fox said he felt vindicated and satisfied that the thousands of voices of abuse victims would finally be heard.

The senior investigator’s explosive allegations on Lateline last week – that the Catholic Church had covered up crimes of paedophile priests and silenced police investigations in the Newcastle-Hunter area of New South Wales – helped to trigger the royal commission, which will probe organisations ranging from church and state authorities to the Boy Scouts and sports groups.

Detective Inspector Fox said the royal commission was a “wonderful result”. He said the push for the inquiry had affected him and his family, including his wife, who suffered a nervous break-down after receiving threatening letters.

He had also received an anonymous threatening letter with police letterhead from a “disgruntled officer” after speaking out about the church and another controversial issue in the past year.

A smear campaign had also been launched against him, with rumours circulating in the police force that he was mentally unstable, Detective Inspector Fox said.

“I don’t want to go into it too deeply, but this is the end of my policing career,” Detective Inspector Fox told Lateline on Monday night.

“I realised that from the moment that I decided to speak out last week. As much as it’s denied, the culture within the police force would never allow someone like me to move back into it.

“I think the Wood Royal Commission [into police corruption in NSW] uncovered it years ago and I’m sorry to say that very little has changed. You know, ostracisation and things of that nature continue to go on within the police force.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bitter with the police force. They’re a minority, those individuals, but they exist everywhere, whether it’s the police force or wherever else in society they may be. We will probably unfortunately never change that.”

Detective Inspector Fox said the royal commission should examine aspects of the Catholic Church such as confession, in which priests had been known to confess to other priests their abuse of children.

“We need to get laws to stop that happening and to compel those priests that are hearing those confessions to say, ‘Listen; God doesn’t want this man to commit more crimes. He wants me to come and tell the police to stop him’,” Detective Inspector Fox said.

He also hit out at Sydney Archbishop Cardinal George Pell’s claims that the royal commission was brought about by ongoing and at times one-sided media coverage.

“It certainly has been one-sided, because it seems to be the Church that has been continually screaming out the message that ‘We don’t need a royal commission, there’s nothing going on here, move along’,” Detective Inspector Fox said.

“We’ve had enough from that one side, Mr Pell. Now we’re going to start listening to the victims and start listening to their families and we’re going to start doing something about the problem.”

Detective Inspector Fox joined Twitter last week in his campaign for a royal commission.

On Monday night he tweeted: “I will sleep with a smile.”

We are talking here at best a steady-state economy. The analysis that I and colleagues in the Tyndall Centre have undertaken would suggest there probably has to be a reduction in our consumption and an economic contraction.
