HUGE NEWS: the Coalition has agreed to provide 12,000 Syrian refugees with permanent safety in Australia.1 It’s a complete turnaround on the Abbott Government’s decision last week not to increase refugee intake, and shows the power people have when we stand together.

    NEVILLE,

    Can you believe it?

Less than a week ago, we woke to the harrowing photo of little Aylan Kurdi, drowned. We read the story of a family torn apart by a tragedy marked by global indifference. And we were horrified as we saw our government’s attempt to shut down compassion with the usual slogan, “Stop the Boats”.

But together, GetUp members and our friends across the movement took that community grief and despair that Aylan’s death sent around Australia, and transformed it into powerful public pressure to offer safety to Syrian refugees. Now the lives of 12,000 people fleeing danger will dramatically change for the better.

On Monday and Tuesday, GetUp members and our friends, family and allies came together to act – lighting the dark in the tens of thousands in cities and towns across the country. And images of those vigils didn’t only light up the front pages and nightly news; they lit a fire under leaders on both sides of the political divide. Politicians arguing for generosity pointed to our vigils as a sign of powerful public sentiment.2

On Monday morning, Tony Abbott was still refusing to move more than a token amount. But after the nationwide vigils began, on Tuesday morning this was the front page of the Victorian Herald Sun:

Front Page of Herald Sun 8 Sep 2015

And today? Things are beginning to change.

For the first time in so long, the Australian government is showing humanity towards refugees, providing real, permanent safety to those in need, genuinely beginning to step up and play its part in the biggest refugee crisis since World War II. Last Thursday, I felt helpless. But today, I am filled with pride in Australia, and hope for what comes next. And it’s because of you.

Click here to see what we made possible together, and if you can, become a core supporter of the refugee campaign.

This announcement is far from perfect, and it leaves much of the harsh reality of Australian refugee policy untouched. Our detention centres are still full of people suffering abuse at the hands of our government and the corporations which profit from these cruel policies. Some of those we keep caged in danger are children just like Aylan.

But today’s news is so much more than anyone imagined was possible last week – and I truly believe it could be a turning point for refugee policy in Australia.

We have broken through the wall of cruelty that has stood around Canberra for far too long. Together, we’ve moved the national conversation from fear and boats to understanding and welcome. We’ve moved from talking about whether Australia will help to talking about how much Australia will do. Our headlines have been full of politicians of all stripes calling for Australia to do more for refugees, and be the generous country we know we can be.

The tide is beginning to change, NEVILLE, and that’s thanks to everyone who took action this week.

Extraordinary moments like this can’t happen in a vacuum – they’re only possible because of the tireless work of volunteers, organisers, allies, and the incredible commitment of so many people all over the country. We’re only able to move quickly and organise events like these when we know we can rely on the commitment of GetUp members to power them with their voice, their time and their small regular donations.

We know we’ve still got a lot more work to do – like getting children out of detention, and ending the system that allows companies to profit from the abuse of people seeking asylum. If you can, click here to become a core part of our movement and help power our action in the future.

When it comes to Australia’s treatment of refugees, hope can be hard to come by. But by standing shoulder to shoulder over the past few days, we proved just how much is possible. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved this week – and I hope you are too.

    In hope,

Aurora, Sally, and Kelsey, for the GetUp team

P.S. In moments like these, we are at our most powerful when we’re together – and never has that been more true than this week. A big thank you and congratulations to all the communities and people who have raised their voices, including the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Amnesty International Australia, Welcome to Australia, Love Makes a Way, Refugee Action Coalition, ChilOut, Care Australia, Oxfam, and so many more for being a part of Light the Dark events and making bold statements for a better Australia. Click here to see photos of the vigils, and become a core member to power this movement into the future.

    Neville —
Today Tony Abbott made two big decisions that directly affect the lives of Syrians caught in the middle of a vicious and complex conflict that has devastated their country for years.

There’s good news — after days of Australians standing up for compassion by attending vigils, signing petitions and pressuring the government to change its mind, it did. Today the Prime Minister announced that Australia will accept 12,000 Syrian refugees above our current intake. This is a welcome decision that will change the lives of 12,000 Syrians.

However, some government backbenchers continue to push for Australia to only accept Christian refugees. The Greens will not stand for discrimination on who is granted refuge based on their religion or any other factor.

But there’s bad news too. Tony Abbott decided that Australia will bomb Syria. This will only make a very bad situation worse. It won’t stop ISIS, it won’t make Australians safer and it won’t make Syrians safer. In fact, it’ll force more people to leave Syria in search for safety.

Share our stand against Tony Abbott’s decision to bomb Syria on Facebook now.

Bombing Syria will only make things worse
It seems the government has learnt nothing from the history of the region. Stand against Tony Abbott’s decision today to bomb Syria — click here to share our Facebook square now.

Whilst today brings good news for 12,000 Syrians who have been forced to flee their home in search for safety, Tony Abbott’s decision to bomb Syria rather than provide a long-term plan for stability is dangerous and will only make the situation on the ground worse.

The Greens will continue to fight this decision in and outside of Parliament.

    Thanks for standing with us,

    Adam

    Dear Neville,
Well, we’ve all caused a bit of a stir at Parliament House in Canberra this week.

On Monday we launched a TV Advertising blitz on Sky News fronted by Alan Jones slamming proposed changes by the Abbott Government to Federal environment laws.

This was possible thanks to the generosity of people from right across the country. And it’s going gangbusters! If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out here.

    playvideo.jpg

Sky News beams directly into the offices of all Federal politicians, so we decided to take our chance to send them a very loud and direct message that they couldn’t ignore.

The changes proposed by Tony Abbott will rip up the basic legal rights of communities to object to dangerous mining projects and prevent us from taking action to defend our finest national assets.

As Alan says in the advert ‘I may live nowhere near the Liverpool Plains or the Great Barrier Reef, but I sure as hell am concerned that they are protected‘.

Big thanks to all the wonderful people who’ve donated to get these running. And if you haven’t done so yet, could you chip in so we can keep this thing rolling?

The ads are already making headlines right around the country*. They’ve put the Government on notice and built powerful momentum to have this divisive plan taken off the table.

Most importantly, they make it clear that the Abbott Government has drastically misjudged the full scale and depth of opposition to their plans from a very wide cross-section of the community.

Already this week, the Federal Labor Party has come out opposing the changes, and many key cross-bench Senators have been wary of them from the outset.

With that in mind, next week we’ll be heading to Canberra with landholders and community groups from across four states to meet with Federal MPs and keep the pressure on Tony Abbott to drop this plan.

We’ve already got meetings organised with 35 politicians, because we know that every vote will count when this issue hits the Senate, and we need to push hard at every turn to knock it over once and for all.

We’ll be getting back to you next week with an update on our Canberra trip, and in the mean time, if you think you could chip in to keep this ad rolling, we’d be enormously grateful.

    Many thanks,

    Phil

Ps These ads stole the thunder of the Minerals Council of Australia on Monday, as they launched yet another ludicrous public relations blitz titled ‘Coal is Amazing’ (I kid you not!). They are relying on the deep pockets of mining billionaires to win the day, but with your support we can take it up to them, and beat them at their own game.

    The Australia Institute

    Dear Neville —

Today, Prime Minister Abbott is heading to Papua New Guinea to represent Australia at the Pacific Islands Forum. When he arrives, he’ll be facing Pacific Leaders who have just signed the historic Suva Declaration on Climate Change, including a call for a global moratorium on new coal mines.

Prime Minister Abbott won’t support the moratorium, but you can back Pacific Leaders by adding your name to our petition.

In part, the Suva Declaration from the Pacific Islands Development Forum Summit of Leaders (PIDF 3) reads:

    Breaking_News_Suva_Declaration_v3.jpg

This is big. The growing movement for a global moratorium on new coal mines has found the backing of Pacific Island leaders, prominent thinkers and economists, and NGOs: all of them backing the President of Kiribati’s call for No New Coal Mines.

“The Suva Declaration is destined to be an historic document of an historic moment in which the Pacific came together as one.”

Will you show the Pacific that Prime Minister of Australia, Tony ‘coal is good for humanity’ Abbott does not represent your view on the future of coal, and join the call of the Pacific Islands for no new coal mines?

The Australia Institute’s research shows Pacific Island leaders’ concerns are justified. Australia’s ambitions to massively expand its coal exports are incompatible with global efforts to halt global warming. As our Chief Economist Richard Denniss recently told the London School of Economics, “…if the world wants to tackle climate change and Australia wants to double its coal exports, somebody is going to lose.”

This historic declaration and the solidarity of Pacific Island nations sends a strong message ahead of Paris COP21: that the Pacific Islands demand concrete action on climate change, and that means no new coal mines. Let’s show that we’re behind them — add your name!

    Thanks for your support,

    The Australia Institute Team

P.S. In other coal news, yesterday morning we released the results of a poll of Newcastle residents exploring their support for Newcastle City Council’s divestment decision, which was due to be rescinded last night. The results were stunning:

    • Almost half (47.3%) of Novocastrians supported the council’s decision, while 24.8% were opposed.
    • Additionally, the majority (51.9%) of respondents to the ReachTEL polling thought that coal investments were financially risky (25.8% thought coal investments are financially safe).

Last night Newcastle City Council, home of the world’s biggest coal port, defeated the motion to rescind (6 votes to five)!

    Hunter Community Environment Centre
    Dear Nevile,
Tomorrow, Newcastle Councillors will vote on whether to overturn their recent decision to divest from fossil fuels.

Following a fortnight of attacks on this important decision to moveNewcastle’s investments away from industries of the past, Liberal Party Councillors have succeeded in calling for a vote to revoke Newcastle’s divestment move.

Click here to encourage Newcastle to stand strong on its vision for a future beyond coal.

Under pressure from the Federal Government and the coal industry, there’s a real chance that the Councillors who backed this motion before could backflip at tomorrow’s vote.

But if enough of us speak out and let Newcastle’s Councillors know that there is strong support for divestment, we can avoid this damaging outcome.

A Fairfax public opinion poll last week found that over 91% of people supported Newcastle’s divestment decision.* As Newcastle’s Councillors get lambasted by the coal industry for showing real leadership, we need to make sure that they know the community has their back and that backflipping on this important decision is not an option.

Let the Councillors who supported Newcastle’s decision to divest hear your support for them standing strong.

Opponents of the divestment decision argue that it will hurt jobs. In reality, the coal industry only employs 2% of Newcastle’s workforce and most of the profits end up overseas rather than supporting the local community.

And that’s why Newcastle’s divestment decision is so important – it recognises the need to invest in industries that guarantee safe, sustainable and local jobs which contribute to the local economy rather than lining the pockets of fossil fuel giants.

If you agree that this is a vision worthy of our support, then join us in calling for Newcastle’s Councillors to stand strong and vote NO to rejecting fossil fuel divestment and YES to a brighter future for Newcastle.

HCEC recognises and appreciates the support and initiative of 350.org in bringing this important issue front and centre for Novocastrians.

    For a healthy Hunter,

Fee and the team at HCEC
