  • Artists celebrate David Malouf

MOB_In-Conversation-with-David-Malouf_AfterMuseum of Brisbane has teamed up with David Malouf and five eminent contemporary artists to pay homage to one of Australia’s most treasured authors in his 80th year to create a new exhibition.

For David Malouf and friends, artists Bruce Reynolds, Noel McKenna, Karla Marchesi, Anna Carey and Camille Serisier will create works based on Mr Malouf’s quintessentially Australian writings, which the famed author will respond to in writing.

The exhibition, which opens on 6 May, will feature illustrations, paintings, photography, multimedia works and installations that explore Mr Malouf’s life and writings, focusing on key moments from his time growing up in Brisbane.

The artists have investigated themes including Australian motifs, Queensland’s tropical climate and architecture, Mr Malouf’s family holidays at Scarborough and his involvement in the arts.

Originally from Brisbane, Mr Malouf has lived and worked in England, Italy and Sydney where he has written prolifically since the 1970s. His award-winning works include nine novels, five non-fiction books, and several collections of poems, short stories and essays.

The exhibition will also feature family photos, theatre programs, personal letters and postcards from Mr Malouf’s extraordinary life.

Museum of Brisbane Director Peter Denham said it was a massive feat to have initiated a creative dialogue between one of Australia’s best loved authors and each of the artists.

“Generations of Australians have grown up enjoying David’s books, essays and poems so it is a privilege to have him on board for our latest exhibition that will pay homage to his incredible contribution to Australian culture,” Mr Denham said.

“This is a unique interdisciplinary collaboration between David, a national icon in Australian literature, and five renowned Australian artists, so it is a significant accomplishment for the Museum and one we think all Australians will appreciate.”

David Malouf and friends will run until 26 October 2014. For more information visit www.museumofbrisbane.com.au.
Museum of Brisbane is open daily from 10am to 5pm on Level 3 of Brisbane City Hall. Free entry.

Public Programs: Events, Tours & Talks

A substantial program of free events will accompany the exhibition, including artist talks, workshops, panel discussions, teacher viewings and appearances from David Malouf himself.

  • Why the rush on Cultural Precinct Master Plan?

QCC1Labor Member for South Brisbane and Shadow Arts Minister, Jackie Trad, is calling on the Newman Government to extend the public consultation period for the Cultural Precinct Master Plan after receiving concerns from local residents.

“The Newman Government’s 20 year Cultural Precinct Master Plan released on Monday represents significant change to the physicality of Queensland’s Cultural Precinct including the loss of open public space at South Bank and should be given more than 25 days for community feedback,” Ms Trad said.

“Given the millions already ripped out of the arts sector by the Newman Government, any commitment to the sector is welcomed and I know the cultural institutions are very keen for connectivity between venues.

“However, if this can only be achieved by flogging off public land at South Bank to build high-rises, then the community needs to know and needs to have a proper say.”

Ms Trad said on the issue of protecting public space at South Bank, Mr Newman has proven himself to be again, inconsistent and hypocritical.

She said at the time that the decision was made to relocate the ABC to South Bank, when he was Brisbane Lord Mayor, Mr Newman was reported as saying:

“This is public open space, it’s part of the parklands and it’s been flogged off to the ABC to enrich the South Bank Corporation and ultimately the State Government,” he said. “I think it’s a disgrace.”

“Now, Mr Newman is arrogantly rushing through his new plans for South Bank without giving residents and the community a genuine opportunity to have a say,” Ms Trad said.

“Mr Newman’s track record of managing projects of a public/private nature is appalling. Brisbane residents remember the failed Clem 7 tunnel, the budget blow out with Legacy Way and the ridiculous CityCycle scheme with thousands of bikes gathering rust and dust throughout our city.

“However, even more concerning is the Premier’s management of the 1 William Street project which the Queensland Auditor-General independently concluded would end up costing taxpayers $2.6 billion over the next 10-15 years, Ms Trad said.

“Given that this is a 20 year plan, the local community should be given more than 25 days to have their views canvassed.”

  • Office building goes solar

Sydney_strawberry hills 1_retouchedPhoton Energy Australia, a subsidiary of global solar power solutions and services company Photon Energy, has recently completed the construction of a large solar power system for a major office building in Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD). The 283 kWp power plant has been commissioned and is up and running. The solar power plant supplements the building’s main daytime energy source.

The power plant will produce 371,000 kWh annually, saving 352 tons of CO2 each year and will assist in achieving a 5 Star Greenstar and 5 Star NABERS rating. The power plant will be used to cover daytime loads with the possibility to export surpluses to the grid, thus generating additional revenue. The system is designed to cover a certain amount of electricity to the building per annum in order to meet the NABERS rating and utilises the available roof surfaces and exposed facades to maximise the output per square meter at the lowest cost per kWh.

“Solar energy is rapidly changing the way Australians look at energy consumption”, says Michael Gartner Managing Director of Photon Energy Australia. “With new financing models available, such as solar leasing or power purchase agreements, customers can now have their own eco-building with a rooftop power plant with no upfront investment. Just costs savings”, Gartner continues.

“PV-systems for self-consumption on commercial property raise a company’s profile, which can be a vital factor in a market where customers increasingly demand that corporates walk the talk on resource efficiency”, says Georg Hotar, CEO of Photon Energy Group.

Solar energy as a power source protects companies against volatile and growing energy prices, thereby raising shareholder value and providing a competitive advantage.

“We are proud to be associated with this flagship project, which highlights that solar PV has reached the tipping point of becoming the most cost effective way of achieving energy efficiency and is a viable choice even given the constraints of inner city locations”, Gartner concludes.

  • A gold mine in lost superannuation

    Suzy Butterworth
Suzy Butterworth, with a little help from her friend, can help you find your lost super

Residents living in postcodes within two kilometres of West End have over a quarter of a billion dollars in lost superannuation according to Suzy Butterworth, Branch Principal and Wealth Manager at Yellow Brick Road West End. “That is an incredible amount of unclaimed money sloshing around in the system that Australians should take back,” she said.

Yellow Brick Road commissioned a study to help the local community realise just how much is at stake. There is almost $15 billion in lost superannuation across the country and even the Australian Tax Office (ATO) is unsure who it belongs to. “Many people change jobs and will often establish a new super account. It’s quite easy to then forget your old super account which ends up as unclaimed money, reducing your retirement nest egg,” says Suzy.

“We are offering to help our community take control and find their missing superannuation so they know exactly how much they have. Part of that process is learning how to invest wisely, and better plan for the future. Just 20 minutes at our office is all it takes to be sure you have a hold on your entire superannuation investment.”

Suzy has helped local residents in and around West End for over a decade on most matters financial and joined Yellow Brick Road to deliver an enhanced service to all her clients. “Our unique advantage is that we provide advice, superannuation services, term deposits, mortgage broking, insurance and even car loans. At Yellow Brick Road, the person that owns the business is the also the person you deal with in a personable way. My clients like the fact they can get total financial peace of mind, all in the one location.”
