Over the last two weeks, volunteers in Melbourne have come together and supercharged the Greens’ campaign in Canning!74 people put their hands up for our 5 phone banks and made over 1600 calls to WA volunteers and voters — talking about the issues that matter most and what their vote means in tomorrow’s byelection.
When the date was set for the byelection in the WA seat of Canning, we asked you and all of our supporters to help us get behind the Greens campaign in Canning. At the time, we knew a big swing away from the Coalition government could be fatal for Tony Abbott’s Prime Ministership. It turns out that the pressure against Tony Abbott both in Canning and Canberra was so strong that he was toppled on Monday this week — before voters in Canning could even make it to the polls.
Now that Malcolm Turnbull is the Liberal leader and our new Prime Minister, all eyes are on him. Turnbull’s test will be whether he sets a new direction for this country and takes action on some of the things that matter most, like:
- Real action on climate change
- Equal marriage for all loving couples
- Releasing children who are locked up in detention
- A strong social safety net
The early signs from the past few days show the Greens have our work cut out for us in keeping this government accountable.
But for now, from me and my team — thank you. We wouldn’t be able to act swiftly and to have had this impact if it weren’t for you.
