Byron meets Yeppoon

admin /3 July, 2007

Byron Bay and Yeppoon are both coastal towns with a strong tourist presence and great beaches. After that there is not a great deal in common between the two places. On June 24 though, a contingent of people from the Northern Rivers joined others from all over Australia to march through the streets of the Continue Reading →

CFMEU joins Howard to back Gunns

admin /2 July, 2007

By Matthew Denholm

Article from: The Australian

The forestry union will today go to the aid of the Howard Government and timber company Gunns in a court case threatening a $2 billion pulp mill proposed for Tasmania.

Almost three years after its members cheered John Howard in the dying moments of the 2004 election campaign, the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union will again stand side to side with the Coalition.

Rather than Launceston’s Albert Hall, where the Prime Minister was applauded by CFMEU members in 2004, the venue will be the Federal Court in Hobart.

Documents lodged with the court on Friday and obtained by The Australian show the CFMEU will today seek to become a respondent to the case, in which the Wilderness Society is fighting to overturn a federal approval process.

NSW Treasurer calls Flannery an idiot

admin /1 July, 2007

Costa referred to "idiots like Tim Flannery saying it’ll never rain" as he launched into a tirade against the theory of greenhouse gases, reported The Sydney Morning Herald (29/6/07, p. 4). Saving jobs at cost to household consumers: He said Flannery and others continually came up with "ridiculous propositions" and told Coalition MPs he would Continue Reading →

Zero emission domestic power in reach

admin /1 July, 2007

Independent MLA Peter Draper told the NSW Parliament on 5 June 2007 that, by following the example of solar-panel use in Germany, "by 2020 every home in Australia could be powered by zero emission energy".

Seize Aussie solar opportunities: Climate change, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the provision of sustainable energy have become some of the most important issues facing not only Australia but also the entire world as we move into the twenty-first century. With huge amounts of sunlight covering our continent, we have a potential renewable energy source with unlimited quantities available, should our communities embrace the installation of solar photovoltaic power technology, or solar energy.

Potential to cut emissions to zero: Australia appeared to be lagging far behind many other parts of the world when it came to the introduction of this technology, despite having the potential to reduce our housing sector greenhouse gas emissions to zero with a sensible roll-out plan.

Biofuel adding to global poverty

admin /1 July, 2007

From ABC Online  A charity that helps farmers in poor countries has strongly condemned the development of biofuels. The charity, called Grain, says growing crops for fuel is causing ecosystems to be destroyed and farmers to lose their land. Fuels from crops are being heavily promoted by the US and Europe as a welcome solution Continue Reading →

Howard’s New Tampa – Aboriginal Children Overboard

admin /1 July, 2007

Howard’s new Tampa children overboard are our Aboriginal children.  The Little Children are Sacred report does not advocate physically and psychologically invasive examinations of Aboriginal children, which could only be carried out anally and vaginally. It does not recommend scrapping the permit system to enter Aboriginal lands, nor does it recommend taking over Aboriginal ‘towns’ by enforced leases.

These latter two points in the Howard scheme hide the true reason for the Federal Government’s use of the latest report for blatant political opportunism. It has been an openly stated agenda that Howard wants to move Aboriginal people off their lands, and has made recent attempts to buy off Aboriginal people by offering them millions for agreeing to lease their lands to the Federal Government, e.g. Tiwi Islands and Tangentyere in Alice Springs. There was also the statement by the Federal Government that it could not continue (?!) to provide essential services to remote communities, which raised an uproar of responses in the press. The focus on the sexual abuse of children is guaranteed to evoke the most emotive responses, and therefore command attention, just like the manipulation of the Tampa situation. But while the attention of the media and the public is being emotionally coerced, what is being sneaked in under the covers?
