    to me

You’re one in (half) a million, Neville.

    Literally.

As of this week, Amnesty International Australia is more than 500,000 supporters strong.

So, what does 500,000 actually mean? We asked our board members from around the country to answer that question.

    Here’s what they said.

More supporters means an even louder, independent voice for human rights.

    So thank you, Neville.

Thank you for sharing our vision for a world in which every person — regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity — can enjoy their fundamental human rights.

Today, thanks to you, we’re closer than ever to achieving that vision.

    For human rights,

    Claire Mallinson

  • STOP THE NSW POWER SELL-OFF

    Dear NEVILLE,

Tomorrow NSW residents head to the polls in an election that will decide the future of our publicly owned electricity network. The Liberals and Nationals are committed to privatising NSW’s most profitable public asset.

You will get to have your say tomorrow and we wanted to provide you with information on how you can vote to Stop the NSW Power Sell Off.

When you vote in the Lower House (small ballot paper) we are asking supporters to number every box and put the Liberals and Nationals LAST.

In the Upper House (large white ballot paper) there are three parties that currently have members elected that are committed to voting against the privatisation of the electricity network – these are Labor, The Greens and the Shooters and Fishers Party.

If you want to Stop the NSW Power Sell Off we recommend supporting one or more of these Upper House parties ABOVE THE LINE, you can do this by numbering these boxes 1 through to 3 in the order of your preference.

When you vote tomorrow, vote to Stop the NSW Power Sell Off by putting the Liberals and Nationals LAST!

    Yours sincerely,

    Adam Kerslake signature

PS: Just weeks ago the people of Queensland voted to save their public assets and we can do the same tomorrow.

    to me

    Hi

Last night, the federal government rejected a deal on the Renewable Energy Target. A renewables industry body, brought to its knees by a year of the government’s sabotage, proposed a desperately weak target to end the deadlock.

The clean energy industry should never have been put in this situation.

At the last election, the federal government promised to support renewable energy. But over the past 12 months, their attacks on clean energy have cost jobs and investment across the country.

    It’s infuriating.

Together we’ve been working hard to grow a clean energy future and we won’t stop now. 88 per cent of Australians support clean energy. In fact only big polluting energy companies will benefit from the government’s actions.

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of you called and emailed your MPs, asking them to keep the Renewable Energy Target strong. You told them how much you want a clean energy future.

You spoke to MP staffers, left messages and sent follow up emails. Some of you were handballed from pillar to post, but you persevered – thank you.

Megan from central Victoria talked to her MP about how sad she feels when she reads Dr Seuss’ The Lorax to her seven-year-old daughter. Helen told her pollie that Longreach’s community is on its knees from the drought – and weakening the Renewable Energy Target will increase energy costs and push local businesses to the wall.

Thousands of you put up clean energy posters in greengrocers, schools and libraries, too. Just a few weeks ago, I was in Bega, NSW, and was thrilled to see one of these posters in a local cafe. Your love for renewable energy stands out in electorates across the country.

Will you help spread the clean energy message even further? If you haven’t already, put up some posters in public places! Let us know how many and we’ll post them to you.

A clean energy boom is taking off across the world. Australia is lagging behind right now, but it’s just a matter of time before we catch up.

In the meantime, it’s up to us to spread the word. Keep the pressure on the government and call out the big polluting energy companies holding us back.

    Give me a sign!

    Thank you,

    Victoria

    to me
    Dear Neville,
This Saturday, we have the opportunity to Stop the Sell Off of our electricity network and to send Tony Abbott a message.

Mike Baird wants to sell our poles and wires to the China state-owned company China Southern Power Grid. This would see the NSW economy lose $1.7 billion in profits that help pay for our hospitals, schools, TAFEs and apprenticeships.

In the last week of this campaign we’ve been showing this ad around NSW – can you watch and share it?

    Stop the Sell Off

When the electricity networks in Victoria and South Australia were sold off power bills increased, jobs were lost, and complaints skyrocketed. The same thing will happen here in New South Wales if the Liberals get their way, hurting families and communities.

Make sure you watch and share the ad we’re showing around NSW in the last week of the campaign.

Selling the electricity network is wrong. Selling it to another country is just not on. And Mike Baird is not going to be a Premier who will stand up to Tony Abbott.

Put the Liberals and Nationals last this Saturday.

    In unity

    The CFMEU

Below is an important message to GetUp members from Dr John Hewson AM, former leader of the Liberal Party, economist and company director. Your details have not been shared with anyone. You can join with Dr Hewson taking action to save the Renewable Energy Target by switching your power to the greenest energy retailer in under 5 minutes: click here to switch now

    Dear NEVILLE

Yesterday, there was some deeply disappointing news concerning our fight for a strong renewable energy powered future.

The renewable energy industry — brow beaten after years of intense lobbying from the big 3 dirty power companies and a vicious offensive from the Coalition, struggling with significant job losses and decline in investment — caved and reluctantly accepted a huge cut to the Renewable Energy Target (RET). They did this to save their industry, which is under attack. The outcome of this deal would be far from ideal, but our government wants a fate for the industry that is even worse. The death of the renewables industry, and the (short term) rise of the dirty 3: Origin, AGL and Energy Australia.

As a former leader of the Liberal Party I’ve seen first hand the undue influence big corporations can have over politicians and public policy. It’s time to shift the balance away from the big energy companies and their dirty and expensive power habits to Australian consumers who want cheaper and cleaner power.

The dirty 3 companies are the main reason the Abbott Government is squibbing on its clear election promise to keep the RET at 41,000GWH. All three are complete hypocrites. They claim to support renewable energy while walking the corridors of power, lobbying to undermine it.

And, unlike renewable energy backed companies, they’ve been getting away with screwing households on their electricity bills by hitting customers with almost obscene profit margins as energy retailers too.

We don’t need government legislation to break the strangle hold these big power companies have on our household energy, or our own clean energy futures. The dirty energy companies might want to protect their huge investments in coal, gas and coal seam gas, but we can — right now — stop them in their tracks.

    How?

Join me in sending a powerful message to politicians and the dirty power companies that Australians want renewable energy and we’re prepared to vote with our feet to get it. Switch your home or business power, it takes less than 5 minutes and you’ll be joining the greenest power company in Australia: click here to switch now

It’s the one thing they will not be counting on, and right now it’s the very best thing that you can do if you support renewable energy, our clean energy future and the job creation and investment it brings.

Yesterday’s outcome is indisputably bad for all of us; for future investment in large scale renewable energy projects and job creation, for our clean energy future and for our power prices.

How did we even get to the point where even the industry that fought so hard for the RET is now accepting a drastically watered down stake in their own future success? You can point the finger squarely at the influence big companies like AGL, Energy Australia and Origin have on public policy, companies with a vested interest in bolstering the status quo of fossil fuel dominance and who have ensured the Coalition break their pre-election promise not to cut the Renewable Energy Target. [1]

These companies only really care about one thing – and that’s their profits. So let’s hit them where it hurts and switch to a company that supports clean energy and is backed by 100 percent renewable power.

Will you join me and thousands of GetUp members switching their energy supplier, and showing your support for clean energy? Click here: it takes just five minutes online to switch off the dirty 3 energy companies.

    Sincerely,
    John Hewson AM.
