    to me
BREAKING: under pressure from the community and the Greens, the Nationals have just changed their position on fracking in Victoria. But we need to keep the pressure on — chip in now to help stop CSG in Victoria for good.

    Neville —

Right now, we have a unique opportunity to stop coal seam gas poisoning our state. On March 14 there will be a by-election in South Gippsland, currently held by the leader of the Nationals. We want to put a full-page ad in the local paper to make sure fracking is the top issue in the election and force the Nationals and Liberals to commit to a complete ban on unconventional gas. Can you help us?

Today the Nationals announced they will allow farmers to veto gas drilling on their land. This is a win, but it isn’t enough. We need a complete ban on fracking for unconventional gas. With your help, we can make it the biggest issue in the upcoming South Gippsland by-election. Will you chip in now?

If just 40 people chip in $40, we can place a full-page ad in the Great Southern Star newspaper in the week of the election. Chip in now to help us keep the pressure on the old parties and show voters where the political parties actually stand on gas drilling.

This district covers hundreds of kilometres that are at risk from fracking, which injects dangerous chemicals into our groundwater, poisons our farmland, and contributes to climate change.

This by-election provides an unprecedented opportunity to put unconventional gas on the agenda and pressure the Liberals and the Nationals to change their position.

Help us put pressure on the old parties and stop fracking in our state today.

All over Victoria, communities are standing up to multi-national corporations with the Greens to defend the country and protect their land from this dangerous practice. The Nationals’ change of position shows the power of having Greens MPs in Parliament — with your help, we can take it even further. Chip in now at http://www.adambandt.com/stop_csg.

    Thanks for standing with us,

    Adam

    Draw the Line

    Dear NEVILLE

I can’t believe it! We’ve just passed 100,000 signatures on our global petition to world leaders asking them to ensure the Great Barrier Reef is protected.  That’s huge!

If you have a moment, can you please help us keep it growing by signing here: wwf.org.au/reef and encouraging others to sign as well.

The more people we can get to sign, the clearer the message to our leaders that it’s time to draw a line and protect the Reef.

    Thanks heaps,

    Louise Matthiesson

    Hi Neville

Can you lend us a hand?

Neville, we’ve noticed you’ve got a stack of twitter followers. People care what you have to say.

Do you think you could help us generate some buzz about our new TV ad?

    March_4_TVC_scrnsht.png

It’s called #March4 what matters, and it’s about the March 4 national day of action, next Wednesday at 10am at Trades Hall.

This ad will first be aired on TV on Wednesday morning (but you get a sneak peek!). We’re letting people know that they don’t have to content themselves with yelling at the TV every night – they can be part of a change.

To help spread the word, can you tweet this link to the ad, and tell the world what you’ll #March4?

Even if you can’t make it to the march next Wednesday, we’d appreciate your help spreading the word.

Go on, this is way better than that cat video you were going to share!

    In solidarity

    Mark – GetUp!

    6:41 PM (7 minutes ago)

    to me
    Dear NEVILLE,

Wow. The response to our alternative Budget proposal has been overwhelming. A phenomenal 750 GetUp members just signed up to make a recurring donation to support fair policy alternatives to Mr Abbott’s austerity Budget.

That’s an incredible show of support for a whole new way for GetUp members to create change — proactively putting forward our own policy package instead of waiting for the major parties. And it’s a powerful response to those in the right-wing media saying that Australians can’t handle “reform”.

Now that we have all that ongoing support, all we need is an immediate injection of funds to jump-start the project. We’re talking to policy experts right now to determine how many fair policies we can research and release before the next Budget. Can you make a one-time donation today to support a fairer Budget?

    Yes, I can chip in.

Let’s show the Government that “reform” means asking polluters and tax dodgers to pay their fair share, not putting the burden on the sick, seniors, young people and families – for more details, read the original email below!

Thank you for all your support,
Mark, Lily, Nat, Georgina and Evan, for the GetUp team

    Dear NEVILLE,

Ultraconservative News Limited columnist Janet Albrechtsen has the explanation for the Abbott Government’s disastrous unpopularity: Australians’ “extraordinary selfishness”.1

Treasurer Joe Hockey launched into the “selfish” attack this week too.2 In fact, all over the right-wing media, we’re getting attacked for the failure of Abbott’s Budget — treating us like children who can’t handle “reform”. Why? Because we stood firm against cuts that unfairly targeted pensioners, students, the sick, young jobseekers and families.

Now’s our chance to show them all that not only can we handle reform, we can lead it. And we’re even willing to selflessly pitch in to fund a truly fair Budget agenda — proving just what everyday Australians can do, when we all work together.

We’re working with respected think tanks to commission modelling for a game-changing policy report — with up to 10 fair policy alternatives to counter Mr Abbott’s austerity measures. We need to raise immediate funds to jump-start the research, before moving onto a public media campaign to put our progressive vision before Australians. And to get out ahead of Mr Abbott’s next Budget, we have to start now.

Click here to show the right-wing ideologues your commitment to creating a better, fairer Budget, by starting a recurring donation as a GetUp Core Member today.

If we don’t make the case to raise government revenue in the fairest way possible, we’ll always be on the back foot, fighting cuts to everyday Australians, from $100k university degrees to GP copayments that undermine our universal health system. It’s only a question of when and by how much we’ll lose.

So with the Abbott Government’s austerity Budget in shambles, and their next Budget looming, now’s the moment to break the conservative policy cycle and get on the front foot with our own progressive vision.

We’ve got a strategy to fight back against the Abbott Government’s taxpayer funded megaphone. That’s to act early – get our policy alternatives out with expert voices on social and traditional media, targeted to marginal electorates with the compelling messages that resonate best. That means strong research, backed by polling to show our leaders what’s popular, and strategic ad buys to get the message out.

To achieve all that we need to start immediately by funding the critical research that starts it all. Can you help?

Yes, I can chip in today: https://www.getup.org.au/fair-budget-now

Mr Abbott’s thrown down the gauntlet over his Budget, telling Parliament: “If you don’t like what we’re doing come up with your alternative.”3

In our conversations with key crossbench senators and other progressive organisations, everybody’s hungry for real, costed policy alternatives to throw back at Abbott’s challenge. Here’s just a few of the reforms we’ll be putting on the table:

    • Subsidies for polluters. Stripping back billions in fossil fuel subsidies, which perversely reward big business for polluting more.
    • Super concessions. Reforming superannuation tax breaks, which go predominantly to higher income earners – estimated to have cost the government $35 billion last financial year alone.4
    • Super profits tax for banks. Taxing the inflated profits made by the big banks thanks to the higher fees they can charge in an uncompetitive market.
    • “The Packer rule”. Preventing the wealthiest people from reducing their tax rate to almost nothing, as Kerry Packer famously did, by capping their use of deductions and tax loopholes.5

With this year’s Budget preparations happening right now, we need to get everything ready to launch as quickly as we can.

Chip in today and show Mr Abbott and Murdoch’s right-wing media what real reform looks like.

Thank you for making all this possible,
Mark, Lily, Nat, Georgina and Evan, for the GetUp team

    to me
    .
    Neville,

I wanted to let you know what I just told the Labor team here in Canberra.

We’ll be spending four of the next five weeks in Parliament – so while the Liberals spend that time talking about themselves, our team will be focused on the people who are counting on us: like the students who will be hurt by Tony Abbott’s plans for $100,000 degrees and those who won’t able to afford to see a doctor because of Tony Abbott’s unfair GP Tax.

I want you to know Labor is ready for the next election. Because millions of Australians – like those who rely on our universal health care system or access to affordable high quality education – demand it of us.

And that’s where you come in. The voices of everyday Australians will always be the most important factor in determining an election result as they were just recently in Victoria and in Queensland.

With the Liberals in such a state of disarray, an election could be on us before we know it.

That’s why we are accelerating plans to roll out our national grassroots election campaign. Votes aren’t simply won with TV ads anymore, it takes millions of one on one conversations to make the difference. We’ll be setting our supporters a target of two million conversations with voters in the lead-up to the next election. We need to change a million minds.

I promise Labor will continue to stand up for Australians who can least afford to be hurt by a vicious budget, but we cannot win this alone. We need your voice in your community. Face-to-face, house to house – on the school run, at weekend sport, walking to the local shop in your suburb; we need you to speak up for the millions of Australians whose voices are not being heard by this government.

We’ll be coming back to you soon with ways you can help us achieve our ambitious target. In the meantime we’ve launched a website to help you have conversations with your friends and family about the issues that matter to you. Like our universities and our health care system.

Labor stands for a smart, modern and fair Australia – and we need your help to get the message out there. This website is just the start.

Thanks for standing with me on this,

    Bill
