Greens hit back at ‘out-of-touch’ Pell

By Sarah Collerton

Updated 2 hours 9 minutes ago

The Greens have retaliated after Sydney’s Catholic Archbishop Cardinal George Pell launched a scathing attack on their party.

In an opinion piece in the Sunday Telegraph, Cardinal Pell labelled the Greens “anti-Christian” and “sweet-camouflaged poison”.

Cardinal Pell also claimed the Greens policies are expensive and will not help poor people.

But Greens leader Bob Brown says Cardinal Pell is just dog whistling.

“The Australian Greens’ policies for a more compassionate society and more sharing society, more dignified society are the most in line with Christian beliefs,” he said.

“The problem for Archbishop Pell is that he’s out of touch with mainstream Australia and many, many Catholics.

“I suspect he’s blowing a dog whistle for a Abbott-Abetz government in future, and that’s a much harsher government than the compassionate policies the Greens are putting forward.”

An ice island with an area of 100 square miles has broken off from one of Greenland‘s two main glaciers in what scientists say is the biggest such event in the Arctic in nearly 50 years.

The huge chunk of ice, which is 600ft thick, broke off the Petermann Glacier, located about 620 miles south of the North Pole, on Thursday.

It is now drifting in a remote area called the Nares Strait between Greenland and Canada.

Up to 100,000 disenfranchised Australians may now vote on August 21

THE High Court has restored the vote to up to 100,000 Australians, who will be added to the rolls in time for the August 21 election.

On what was hailed as a “historic day” for democracy, the court handed down its majority ruling yesterday in the fastest-ever turnaround for a full bench hearing.

Shannen Rowe and Douglas Thompson, members of political advocacy group GetUp!, challenged the constitutional validity of changes the Howard government made to the Electoral Act in 2006. Experts predicted the decision may have consequences for future constitutional challenges and could have an impact on the outcome of the election.
