    Neville,

On Thursday morning MPs from all sides of politics gathered at the Parliament House forecourt to hold a candlelight vigil to call for mercy from the Indonesian Government for Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. This was by far the most important and most powerful moment this week. I was contemplating just writing about the vigil this week, but the purpose of this email is to let you know what’s been happening in Parliament, and there are certainly plenty of moments, good and bad, that need to be shared; so here they are.

    BEST:

    1. On Tuesday Bill Shorten and Tony Abbott came together to support the #HeforShe campaign. This important campaign to end gender inequality is best summed up by UN Women Ambassador, Emma Watson (a.k.a. Hermione Granger!), who posed these two important questions: “If not me, who? If not now, when?” Learn more at www.heforshe.org.
    2. It’s unacceptable in 2015 one in three women over the age of 15 will face physical violence.  On Wednesday, Bill announced Labor’s plan to invest $70 million to tackle domestic violence and hold a National Summit to get Commonwealth, state and territory governments working together. If Tony Abbott decides not to hold a Summit, a Labor Government will. Watch Bill’s speech here.
    3. On Monday Bill Shorten, Shadow Treasurer, Chris Bowen, and Shadow Assistant Treasurer, Andrew Leigh, announced Labor’s plan to tackle multinational tax evasion. The independent Parliamentary Budget Office found Labor’s plan will save $1.9 billion over three years. It’s time this Liberal National Government got its priorities right and backed Labor’s plan to make multinational corporations pay their fair share.
    4. Tony Abbott always says he’ll do the right thing immediately before people vote; he did it before the Federal Election, he did it before the Victorian Election and now he’s doing it before the New South Wales Election. But by his own admission “this leopard doesn’t change its spots. On Tuesday Shadow Health Minister Catherine King called out Tony Abbott’s GP Tax back down for what it really is. Watch here.
    5. On Thursday the Government finally released the Intergenerational Report; several weeks late and in breach of the law. What we found out from this report is best summed up in this speech by Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen. The Treasurer tried to claim this report is written by public servants, but when Labor asked the public servants they said it was all the Treasurer’s; another lie from the Government.

    WORST:

    1. Tony Abbott wants people to think the GP Tax is gone. Yet on Tuesday Health Minister Sussan Ley refused to answer questions about whether the Government’s new plan will have the same outcome just with a different name. It doesn’t matter what they call it – a ‘tax’, a ‘co-payment’, a ‘price signal’, a ‘value signal’ or their newest favourite, ‘direct billing’ – this Government is determined to see Australians pay more to visit their doctor.
    2. On Thursday Catherine King asked Sussan Ley to explain how ‘direct billing’ actually works. It was a train wreck of an answer where the Minister spent the entire time not admitting to what became clear to everyone in the Parliament: she has no idea how it works.
    3. Last week we saw the Government’s disgraceful attack on Human Rights Commission President, Gillian Triggs. On Monday the Senate successfully censured Attorney-General, George Brandis for his role in these attacks and for being unfit to hold the office of Attorney-General. The motion passed 35:32.
    4. There are many, many, things wrong with the Government’s Intergenerational Report. But possibly the most disturbing thing is the Government trying to proclaim the benefits of climate change. That’s right, this report describes climate change as “beneficial”. I’m not sure what’s worse, Tony Abbott claiming the climate isn’t changing, or his new claim that climate change is good.
    5. Last year the Government removed guidelines setting the minimum hourly-rate for some of Australia’s lowest paid workers, Commonwealth cleaners. At the time Tony Abbott said: “I want to make it absolutely crystal clear that no cleaner’s pay is reduced.” Well, on Monday we found out he’s broken yet another promise, with new contracts showing pay cuts of $2 per-hour for some cleaners.

I don’t know what happened, but one of the more interesting moments this week was when Speaker Bronwyn Bishop yelled at Albo: “Do not answer back!” I’m not sure what he said, but clearly it worked. The #5and5 will be back in two weeks.

    Best,

    Tony

PS: Last week I promised Pearl Jam or Metallica. This week I am delivering. This week’s #5and5 song of the week is dedicated to Tony Abbott, a “Nothingman”.

    Neville —

Five years ago my community had a public meeting and resolved to fight Rio Tinto’s proposed Warkworth coal mine expansion in the Hunter Valley. Why? Because it would wipe out our home – the village of Bulga.

Since then we have beaten Rio in court, twice. We proved that expanding the Warkworth mine would do more harm than good, not only for our community but for all of NSW. We thought that would be the end of our struggle, but we were wrong.

The NSW Government has been working hand-in-glove with Rio Tinto to force this unwanted mine on our community. Government agencies and Ministers have had secret meetings with Rio, helping the company prepare a new development application for the mine. The NSW Government has even changed the law to allow the Warkworth project to go ahead.
Today, the NSW Planning Assessment Commission published its review of Rio’s new development application. The Commission says the mine is “capable of being approved”, because of the changes to mining regulations introduced by the government. My community is disgusted. Our government has abandoned us, and sided with a global mining giant to destroy our town.
We are still determined to win, but we need your help. Today, we’re joining with local businesses and Wonnarua traditional custodians to launch The Bulga Declaration. It’s a statement of intent from our community – and our supporters – that we will use all peaceful means to stop this mine. We have been left with no other choice.
Please join us. Sign the Bulga Declaration here, and share it with your friends.
The Baird government may have signed the death warrant for Bulga, but the people have not. The government and Rio Tinto are colluding against us, but we are united and we will not be subdued.

    Regards,

John Krey, Bulga Milbrodale Progress Association

    James – GetUp!

    2:03 PM (1 hour ago)

    to me

    Dear NEVILLE,

It has been revealed that are plans in NSW for a massive rollout of new coal and coal seam gas projects on an unprecedented scale.

The three biggest and dirtiest energy companies – AGL, Energy Australia and Origin, who most Australians buy power from – are all involved in coal seam gas (CSG) and coal mining. They’ve also been lobbying the government to cut our Renewable Energy Target, a critically important policy that drives investment in renewable energy.

We’ve got a really fast, simple, high impact way to stop them in their tracks and protect our our communities, water supplies and environment – by switching power company right now, en masse.

NEVILLE, you pledged to switch your home or business electricity retailer when the Better Power campaign launched the campaign here. Already, over 5,348 GetUp members in Victoria have made the switch. Now, it’s time for NSW to vote with our feet and switch to a power company that, like us, is anti-CSG and a real champion of renewable energy:

Click here to find out more and make the switch.

We know that our collective consumer power can stop AGL’s plans to grow their CSG operations in NSW. Just last month global financial analysts Citi Research said:

“We think there are early warning signs of negative connotations around Gloucester (CSG) impacting AGL in some retail customer segments. If these negative associations become more mainstream, walking away from/disposing of Gloucester may become the right option to protect the larger retail brand and earnings.1

That’s huge! Put simply, what Citi are saying is that if enough of us leave AGL the company will have no choice but to dump its plans for CSG in NSW.

We’re excited to have partnered with Powershop, rated the greenest elecritiy retailer in Australia by Greenpeace and the Total Environment Centre. For every person that switches as part of this campaign, Powershop makes a small payment towards our campaigns to stop CSG, damaging coal mining, and to save renewables.

It’s really quick and easy to switch. It takes about 5 minutes, and it’s all done online. You don’t even have to contact your old, dirty power company. And Powershop doesn’t lock you into a contract or charge exit fees so there’s no risk. Can you switch to better, cleaner power now and help stop the roll out of CSG and coal in our communities? http://www.getup.org.au/BetterPowerNSW

Getting together with other Australian consumers to use our financial power to fight for a clean energy future will have a direct, immediate and hard hitting impact. You’ll be sending the strongest message possible to the dirty power companies – if you attack renewables and support dirty coal and CSG your customers will leave you. And at the same time, you’ll be supporting a pro-renewables, anti-CSG company that over 5,000 GetUp members have switched to already.

We’ve got an ambitious target – we need 50,000 people to switch before the Annual General Meetings of AGL and Origin.

Ready to use your power as a consumer to start the shift? http://www.getup.org.au/BetterPowerNSW

Together we can create an unstoppable shift to clean up our energy market, starting with our choice of who we buy our power from. Let’s make the switch massive NSW!

James, Paul and Michael for the GetUp team.

PS – The dirty power companies who dominate the NSW electricity market – Origin, EnergyAustralia and AGL – are all invested in CSG, and coal fired power stations and have been trying to wreck the Renewable Energy Target. It’s time to switch to a better, cleaner power company who, like you, is opposed to CSG and is fighting to save the Renewable Energy Target. Join the switch now and forward this email to your friends and family: www.getup.org.au/BetterPowerNSW

PPS – If you have want more information you will find an FAQ here.

    Hi Neville ,

It’s happening again. Senator Colbeck is welcoming a huge freezer factory trawler from Europe to fish in the Australian small pelagic fishery, despite ongoing concerns about the threats this poses to our unique marine life, fisheries and local fishing. We need your help to stop this again, and we only have weeks.

Senator Colbeck has failed to implement the Expert Panel’s recommendations on how to minimise the risks, started a Trojan Horse ban on super trawlers over 130m long (even though only a handful exist) and ignored your concerns about bringing these global factory trawlers into Australian waters.

It’s time to bypass Senator Colbeck and get the Australian Government to start listening!

In 2012 we all worked together to stop the super trawler Margiris, and we can do it again.

Click here to use this easy online email form to ask your Local MP and Senators to start listening and stop the Geelong Star and ALL large freezer factory trawlers before it’s too late!

The Geelong Star is managed by the same company who owns the super trawler Margiris. Previously named the Dirk Dirk, this factory trawler has been flagged to Australia and renamed after its soon-to-be new home port, Geelong Victoria. And it’s already ruffling feathers! We’ve got Victorian community groups joining the Stop the Trawler Alliance so they can help stop this new factory trawler from wiping out their local waters (and all those from the QLD border around to WA).

Help send a strong message to your Member of Parliament and Senators that these large freezer factory trawlers are not wanted! Email them today

The Small Pelagic Fishery season opens on 1 May and the Geelong Star has left its European port already. So it will be here in a matter of weeks.

Please help to protect our local fisheries, fishing and unique marine life from this threat and make sure that the Abbott Government knows Senator Colbeck’s welcoming party stands to further isolate the Government from their constituents.

    Let’s turn this boat around!

Thanks so much for all that you do,

Bec, Erika and the Stop the Trawler Crew.

p.s. It is critical that Local MPs and Senators get thousands of emails if we are to convince the Government to overturn Senator Colbecks super trawler welcome. Please send your email today – it will only take 2 minutes.

Trigger warning: this email discusses domestic violence=======

    Neville,

There is no clearer symbol of continuing gender inequality in our society than the epidemic of violence against women and the chilling statistics that go with it.

1 in 3 Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

17 per cent of Australian women have experienced violence by a current or previous partner in their lifetime.

20 per cent of Australian women who have experienced current partner violence reported it to police.

Family violence is the number 1 cause of homelessness amongst women in Australia.

The biggest risk factor for being a victim of family violence is being a woman.

And so far this year, we’ve seen an average of two women have been killed each week at the hands of their partners or former-partners.

    This is not acceptable.

That’s why I’ve called on the Prime Minister to hold a national crisis summit on family violence as soon as possible. Failing that, Labor will hold a summit within 100 days of being elected and invest in interim measures — because it is the responsibility of every one of us to end this.

We must change these awful statistics and you can read Labor’s plan to get started on that work here.

The nightmare of family violence is a reality for far too many Australian women. No one should have to face this ordeal on their own. This is a crisis for our nation. We cannot waste another day, we must start work now.

Thank you for standing with every Australian experiencing family violence.

    Bill

    .
    Neville,
It was hard not to be cynical on reports today that the Liberals are dropping the GP Tax, yet again.

You and I have been campaigning for more than a year now to stop this GP Tax — and we’ve had wins along the way.

But sadly today’s announcement has amounted to nothing but another exercise in spin by the Liberals. Tony Abbott is still committed to wrecking Medicare, and wrecking bulk-billing.

He’ll say anything to keep his leadership on life support, but he won’t give up on his GP Tax.

Tony Abbott has publicly fought for his GP tax no less than 53 times. Can you share this image with your friends so they know how we all have to keep standing up for Medicare?

We don’t yet know what’s coming next for Medicare except that the Health Minister, Sussan Ley is making clear it will still involve a GP Tax because: “The policy intent was and remains a good one.”

Tony Abbott might say the GP tax is dead, buried and cremated. But just like WorkChoices, we know better.

You and I both will have to keep up the fight to keep Medicare fair for all Australians.

    Thanks for your support,

    Catherine King
    Shadow Minister for Health
