    Dear friends,

Newcastle’s visionary decision to divest from fossil fuels has exploded onto the national stage.

Can you take five seconds to vote in this Fairfax poll, and show your support for divestment? (scroll down the page to find the poll)

This morning, Prime Minister Tony Abbott came out hard attacking Newcastle City Council’s decision to divest from fossil fuels.* Home to the biggest coal port in the world, Newcastle’s divestment has been championed by a council working to diversify the community’s economy away from coal, mirroring the actions of leaders across the globe.

But this act of leadership has come under attack from the coal lobby and conservative politicians. Some have even launched personal attacks on the Councillors who voted in favour of divestment. Now a poll in The Newcastle Herald gives us the chance to show those leading this attack that they are out in the cold, and that the community stands with Newcastle.

The poll is a yes or no question – do you support divestment? Click here to vote.

Polls like this give decision-makers a quick temperature check about how the community would vote on an issue. This is our chance to show the Newcastle City Council that there is overwhelming support for their decision to divest. This is also a chance to show the politicians who are attacking Newcastle that if they value their elected seat, then they better change their tune.

Vote here. Half way down the article.

    Onwards!

Hi NevilleYou won’t believe it. The Abbott Government is about to approve the slaughter of more dolphins by the foreign factory trawler Geelong Star. Send an urgent email here to the Environment and Fisheries Ministers and make sure they don’t approve more dolphin deaths.

Dolphins are known to feed at night, and after the Geelong Star killed nine dolphins in its first two fishing trips, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority banned it from night fishing. But now, the operators of the Geelong Star are crying poor and lobbying to lift the night fishing ban, even though they don’t have a proven way to stop dolphins and seals dying.

The Abbott Government is expected to make a decision about approving night fishing (and dolphin killing) in the next three days.
Please click here to sign a quick email to the Government urging them to protect our dolphins.

Seafish – the Tasmanian operators of the factory trawler Geelong Star – pleaded guilty to a string of pollution charges in a Tasmanian court last week. Parlevliet en van der Plas – the foreign owners of the Geelong Star – have been charged with illegal overfishing a number of times overseas.

Don’t let the Abbott Government put the interests of these criminals ahead of our protected dolphins, our local fisheries and our coastal communities. Send the Ministers an email today using our easy online form.

We will be stepping up the action against super trawlers over the next few months because we don’t think the Abbott Government would dare go into the next election boasting dead dolphins and plundered recreational fisheries, and we’ll need your help.

It’s fair to say that the campaign against super trawlers in Australia has been one of the most inspiring, uniting and effective campaigns for our oceans in recent history. Thank you for making this happen!

p.s. Dolphins are known for feeding at night, so if the Abbott Government approves a return to night trawling by the Geelong Star, they will be approving dolphin deaths. Send our Ministers an urgent email today and tell them to protect our dolphins from destructive factory trawlers.

“What if I didn’t have to wait until 2016? What if I could make Tony Abbott a half-term PM?”

No joke NEVILLE, this is our chance.

Nominations just closed for the by-election that could seal Tony Abbott’s fate and shift the political direction of the nation. Now we’ve just 23 days for an all-out, banners blazing election campaign.

Here’s what you need to know. Canning in WA was a safe Liberal seat, by a nearly 12% margin. But thanks to the unpopularity of the Abbott Government’s radical right wing agenda, the race is virtually tied: 50.1% Labor, 49.9% Coalition.1

Senior Liberal figures say the loss from a swing of this size will likely cost Tony Abbott his job. And Liberal MPs in marginal seats are “mildly terrified” about their future, meaning a loss in Canning could force a political retreat on this government’s unpopular attacks on health, education and clean energy.2

A few hundred votes could tip the balance, and that’s when our movement is at its most powerful. But we need to act fast.

We’re armed with polling from Canning voters telling us the very issues that will shift these key votes. Local GetUp members will hit the streets, joining grassroots efforts on the ground. And to back them up, we’ll blanket the electorate with hard-hitting outdoor, print and digital advertising. But ad space is in high demand and we have to make decisions now about what we can afford to do.

Click here to chip in to our game-changing Canning campaign now.

Imagine it. An end to the relentless attacks on our public school and hospitals, pensioners and young people, a clean energy future, and fair go for all Australians. That’s exactly what we could see if the Abbott leadership meets its downfall on 19 September in Canning.

Even Mr Abbott has said that Canning will be the ‘real’ test for how people feel about his government.3 The West Australian was more emphatic: “If the ReachTEL poll is reflected on polling day, it would certainly spell the end of Tony Abbott’s prime ministership.”4 The battle lines have been drawn, but how much we can tip the scales in the next 23 days depends on how much we can raise.

Are you up for it? https://www.getup.org.au/canning

It’s been two years since Mr Abbott became top dog, and in this time we’ve lost so much. Massive cuts to our ABC and the SBS, thousands of experts forced out of the CSIRO, attacks on clean energy, pensions and social welfare – not to mention efforts to dismantle our world-class Australian healthcare and education systems. No generation has been spared, no working family left unscathed.

And despite widespread public consensus they’ve overstepped their mark, Mr Abbott’s Government continues to pig-headedly ram through his radically conservative agenda.

But the people of Canning could change all that when they cast their ballots on 19 September, in a by-election that’s become a full-blown referendum on Tony Abbott’s agenda.5 Throwing an election campaign together in three weeks is ambitious, but rapid grassroots campaigning and cutting-edge political advertising is what GetUp does best.

There are billboards available now in major Canning commuter corridors, but we’ve only 24 hours to book them in if we’re to get them up in time.

Click here to help transform the Canning by-election into a day of reckoning for Tony Abbott and his ideological right-wing agenda.

There are defining moments in a nation’s history where a people must decide what type of country they want to be. Our movement must speak out now, on behalf of families, the sick, the vulnerable, the marginalised, students, teachers, nurses, clean energy workers, the ageing – all those who don’t have a team of lobbyists treading the halls of Parliament House – because if we don’t, who will?

    Enough is enough,
Nat, Mark, Paul, Kelsey, Kajute and Sam L, for the GetUp team

PS – This vital work is about more than just Canning. With your help, the fight will continue in the months ahead with cut-through ads, polling, and election-changing grassroots networking – the very tactics that has established our movement as a formidable force for change. We’ll carry the fight right through to next year’s federal election with our biggest campaign effort ever. We’ll hold this government’s feet to the fire on universal healthcare, university fees, cuts to our public schools and hospitals and its ideological war on clean energy. We’ve been able to change the course of elections before, but to do so, we need to invest now. Click here to chip in.

    Neville —

We have a chance to send Tony Abbott a message like never before: we aren’t happy his $30 billion in cuts to our schools and we won’t sit down and cop it.

The Canning by-election will be held on 19 September. Canning is not a seat we would normally have a chance at winning, but two recent polls have it at 50/50 – it’s right down to the wire.

If we win it – or even if we come within a few percent of winning it – Abbott’s leadership will be questioned by his colleagues. The Liberals will be very nervous about what the Australian people think of their plans for our country.

It’s an uphill battle and so we are throwing everything we have into this important campaign – not only for the people of Canning, but for the rest of us so badly impacted by Tony Abbott’s backwards Government. Will you contribute to help tip the balance against Tony Abbott and his captain’s pick candidate?

It’s down to Tony Abbott’s hand-picked candidate flown in from Sydney and Labor’s local Western Australian candidate Matt Keogh, who has spent time in local schools in his area campaigning against Abbott’s cuts.

Tony Abbott’s Government has taken Australia backwards and this by-election in Canning is potentially a real game changer. Please chip in to help us make sure he can’t turn his prospects around.

“I almost fell off my seat.” – Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane responding to Newcastle City Council’s decision to divest from fossil fuels on Tuesday night.

    Dear friends,

Newcastle’s landmark decision to divest from fossil fuels is under attack from the coal industry and the coalition.

Can you help defend Newcastle’s leadership by writing a letter to The Newcastle Herald editor?

On Tuesday evening, the Newcastle City Council, home to the world’s largest coal port, voted to divest from fossil fuels.* It was a courageous decision from a council striving to diversify the community’s economy away from coal, just as leaders are globally.

But an attack led by the coal lobby and conservative politicians is labelling Newcastle’s decision as “astounding” and “misguided.” These comments have come to a head in The Newcastle Herald. It’s vital that we push-back against this unhelpful commentary by showing that the community supports Newcastle’s decision.

Can you write a letter to The Newcastle Herald, expressing your support for Newcastle City Council’s decision to go fossil free?

To maximise the chances of getting your letter placed, we’d recommend keeping it short and sweet. Keep a professional tone and say a little about yourself. Then explain why you care about divestment. It also helps to mention the article you are responding to – which would be this article from the Newcastle Herald yesterday, entitled ‘Newcastle Council’s Coal War’.

Some suggested talking points could be:

    • The world is moving away from fossil fuels, and in particular coal.
    • Newcastle’s decision supports investments in clean, renewable energy, and innovation.
    • This decision focuses investment towards diversification, and encourages new employment opportunities for people in Newcastle and Australia.
    • Newcastle City Councillor Declan Clausen is demonstrating the visionary leadership that Australian politics lacks.
    • Newcastle joins 35 institutions in Australian and 350 institutions globally who have committed to divest from fossil fuels. This includes the $900bn Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund, Stanford University and the ACT Government.

Click here to send a letter to the editor. Thank you for supporting real community leadership!

    Onwards!

Save our ocean giants. Chip in today and help stop the Abbott Government from taking our sanctuaries.

    Dear NEVILLE

Last week I emailed you about the Abbott Government’s review of our entire new network of marine sanctuaries. They’re allowing oil and gas to sneak in and commercial fishing could be next.

Damaging commercial fishing activities could expand into our new sanctuaries with many marine species becoming accidental victims of gillnets and longlines.

We need marine sanctuaries where vulnerable ecosystems can be protected and marine life can rejuvenate and breed.

Our chance to save our sanctuaries is now. The Abbott Government will be making a decision on the review in the coming months but with a recent history of governments ignoring scientific recommendations your action today is vital.

NEVILLE, can you chip in a few dollars today and together we can win our new marine sanctuaries back?

Australia is home to some of the most incredible places on earth, including the Kimberley, the Great Australia Bight, Lord Howe Island and the Coral Sea. The Coral Sea is one of the world’s last refuges where our ocean giants still thrive – but it’s at risk.

Like an image from a children’s book, gigantic whale sharks glide through the Coral Sea waters with dolphins, turtles and whales amongst a backdrop of underwater mountains – some as tall as Kosciusko.

Unbelievably, longline commercial fishing for tuna could expand in this marine wonderland. Longlines are usually kilometres long with thousands of hooks, that can’t discriminate between tuna and endangered species.

They drift near the surface of the ocean and accidentally catch marine life including the endangered leatherback turtle and vulnerable short fin mako sharks, and impact important fish populations. Sadly, over 1200 mako sharks were killed last year in Australia’s eastern tuna fishery alone.

Sometimes longlines break underwater leaving kilometres of line, entangling whales, turtles and other animals that later drown if they can’t get free. There are even reports of an underwater mountain in the Coral Sea wrapped in discarded longline!

I urge you protect our Coral Sea and new marine sanctuaries from exploitation. If you can help, please chip in today

Our other sanctuaries are also at risk from the expansion of commercial fishing practices around Australia. Gillnets, large mesh nets suspended in the water, could be allowed into other sanctuaries. Gillnets ‘target’ fish and sharks, but they kill many marine mammals including precious sea lions, but especially dolphins and threatened sharks.

It’s shocking. Sanctuaries are places that should be free from hooks, nets and other dangers! These sanctuaries represent a small part of Australia’s waters, leaving the majority of our ocean free for a range of uses.

There are solutions. We need sustainable fisheries and we need safe havens for endangered species.

Please chip in a few dollars today and we’ll work around the clock to save our sanctuaries – for you, me and the majority of Australians who wanted our special marine places protected.

Your donation will help us mobilise the tourism, business and scientific communities to build strong opposition against plans to remove our sanctuaries. You’ll help us keep running events, community stalls, advertising and hard hitting media as well as meeting with key parliamentarians to make sure they hear our collective voice.

This is how we’ve kept the Reef safe from industrialisation so far. I need your help to do it again and save our sanctuaries like the Coral Sea, the Kimberley and the Great Australian Bight from exploitation. And because AMCS is solutions focused, we’ll continue to work with fisheries and the Australian public promoting sustainable fishing practices and sustainable seafood choices.

Globally, we are witnessing an unprecedented collapse of ocean resources. Healthy sanctuaries are one of the best solutions to make our oceans more resilient to the impacts of climate change and overuse. Nature doesn’t need much to recover, but it needs something.

Our seas need our support. Thank you for your care for our big blue planet.

    Yours for our oceans,

    Darren Kindleysides
    AMCS Director

P.S. Please chip in today to save our marine sanctuaries from the destructive oil, gas industries and these damaging commercial fishing practices.
