Industry whistleblowers broke the silence on poker machines this week, in the explosive premiere of KaChing! Pokie Nation, now available on ABC iview. Below is an important message to GetUp members from Tim Costello, Australian Baptist minister, World Vision Australia CEO and member of the Alliance for Gambling Reform. Your details have not been shared with anyone.

banner image, reads: A message from Tim Costello, accompanied by a photo of him

    Dear NEVILLE,

Ka-Ching! Pokie Nation left me shocked, revolted, and above all, angry.

For 20 years I’ve witnessed the damage caused by poker machines to our families and communities. But even I didn’t understand the extent of industry manipulation – until now.

Ka-Ching! went inside poker machines to show how they’re rigged to addict and impossible to win over time. One industry whistleblower explained how machines can be set to either “shear or slaughter the sheep” – and most Australian pokies are set to “slaughter”.

It makes you wonder how our governments allow these machines to be out there. I’ll tell you how: the absolute capture of both major parties by the pokies industry.

That’s why I’ve joined with more than 40 local governments, churches and community groups to form the Alliance for Gambling Reform.

Soon, I’ll be walking into the offices of the people who make, control and regulate these machines – from Woolworths, the largest poker machine owner in the country, to government ministers, many of whom sit cosily in the pockets of the gambling industry.

The difference between walking into those meetings alone, and walking in backed by the power of tens of thousands of Australians, cannot be overstated.

Click here to stand with us against poker machines designed to addict as we walk into the lion’s den.

If we can build enough power together, the Alliance will work closely with GetUp members like you to expose the truth about poker machines. Together we’ll:

    1. Blow the lid off the gambling industry by exposing how poker machines are rigged to keep people playing and fuel addiction
    2. Shame companies profiting from pokies addiction, costing them customers and investors
    3. Take on the poker machine industry in the courts, if that’s what it takes.

Then, when we’ve demonstrated the deliberate, misleading conduct of the pokies industry, we’ll take the fight to Parliament House, to the doorsteps of our MPs and senators.

But to do all of these things, we need tens of thousands of Australians standing with us. And it starts today – off the back of this explosive ABC documentary – with educating the people you know about the pokies con by signing and sharing this petition.

Click here to join the calls for con-free machines, and then learn more about the Alliance for Gambling Reform.

In 2012, I worked with GetUp members as part of the Stop the Loss Coalition. Together we took on the pokies industry and fought for sensible measures to curb poker machine harm. We were on the cusp of major reforms when the pokies lobby got to our politicians and snatched victory from our hands. We lost the battle, but not the war.

We’ve learned from these setbacks, developed a new strategy, and now we’re back, stronger and smarter, and with an alliance far broader than the last. We’re armed with new, cut-through messaging on how to explain the pokies con to Australians and research that dives deep into the artful con of machine design.

But the final piece of the puzzle is you: tens of thousands of ordinary Australians committed to con-free poker machines. Will you join us? https://www.getup.org.au/pokies-con

    Sincerely,
    Tim Costello
    Alliance for Gambling Reform

PS – You may have seen stories about the poker machine industry crop up in the news recently. There are revelations our politicians being paid off by industry lobbyists, Woolworths-owned pokie-pubs luring families in with ‘kids eat free’ deals, and new poker machines coming to Australia, more addictive than ever before. If, like me, you’re sick to death of the pokies playing us all, join the fight for con-free poker machines: https://www.getup.org.au/pokies-con

PPS – Miss out on Tuesday night’s shocking exposé? Or keen to share with friends? Ka-Ching! Pokie Nation is available on ABC iview for the next two weeks

    to me

    Dear Inga,

Big news out of federal parliament today – climate contrarian Bjorn Lomborg’s ‘Consensus Centre’ has seen its $4 million of taxpayer dollars evaporate in the face of overwhelming public opposition.

This is a victory to savour, in no small part due to you and the extraordinary Climate Council community, and the way you responded to the threat of climate misinformation.

If you don’t remember the story, this is the one where after massive cuts to world class scientific institutions across Australia, the federal government found $4 million of taxpayers money to help Bjorn Lomborg bring his unique brand of climate contrarianism to our sunny shores.

The resulting public backlash – which included the efforts of so many of you! – lead directly to today’s announcement. So for today, a big congratulations to you! Take a bow and maybe do a little victory dance (we are certainly doing one at HQ) – you have played a major role in sending a misinformation merchant packing.

However, as we know all too well, there is no shortage of climate change misinformation and misdirection being peddled as fact. So we will continue to ensure that the very best climate science is placed front and centre where it belongs. We will show that real action on climate change is possible and that we must act without delay. And we will continue to challenge the misinformation that threatens to derail real action on climate change.

    Thank you,

    Amanda McKenzie
    CEO, Climate Council

    Neville —

I wanted to let you know as soon as I could. Labor has secured a comprehensive package of safeguards for Australian jobs as part of our negotiations on the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement. By working with the community, we’ve been able to secure a win for Australian workers.

Labor has stood up for local jobs and delivered a safety net of decent wages and conditions for all workers. Specifically, making sure jobs have to be advertised to Australians first, protecting Australian wages and conditions, and upholding workplace skills and safety standards.

This is a great win for workers in Australia. This means Australia will get the benefits of increased trade with China, whilst not undermining Australian jobs.

I’m really glad Labor has delivered this outcome. It’s good for our economy and it’s good for Australian jobs.

Are you able to share the good news?

Thanks for standing with me on this,
    Bill

*Content warning: discussion of sexual assault and family violence*

    Inga,

Imagine enduring years of physical, sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of your partner, finally accessing the support you needed to escape him, and then being dragged through the courts – and forced to stand in the witness box while he asks you questions about every aspect of your personal life.

That’s what happened to me – because there was nothing stopping my abuser from cross-examining me in family court. Yesterday my local MP Cathy McGowan took my call for change to the federal parliament and urged the government to urgently introduce a law to stop this from happening.[1]

Can you help me build enough community pressure to force Attorney-General George Brandis to introduce a law to protect victims in family court?

My ex-husband abused me physically, sexually and emotionally for 11 years.  The day that I packed my children and I into our tiny corolla and left our family home, he told me ‘I’m going to take you for everything you’ve got’. He tried and the system enabled him in many ways.

Even though he was criminally charged for what he had done to me, I was sick to my stomach when I discovered that he would be able to cross-examine me during family law proceedings.

The day I took the stand and was forced to answer the questions of a man who had sexually assaulted and abused me for over a decade was a massive slap in the face. And having to endure that horrific experience was a major obstacle in my recovery from the trauma of his abuse – an invasive, disempowering and cruel process I was forced to endure by our courts.

No person should be cross-examined by the person who sexually assaulted and beat them. We need our laws to firmly state that this should never be able to happen. Will you join my campaign? Click here to get involved.

The states and territories already have rules in place to make sure the criminal proceedings in their jurisdictions don’t allow perpetrators to cross examine those they’ve abused. It’s unbelievable that the federal, family law courts don’t have this rule in place as well.

For the past two years I’ve seen the community work together to pressure decision-makers to drive important changes on the broken family violence system. Can you stand with me and build the pressure needed to change this cruel system?

    Thanks for your support,

    Eleanor, survivor of family violence

    to me

This email is being sent to you on behalf of Liverpool Plains farmers Paul and Rosemary Nankivell, via 350.org Australia. Your details haven’t been shared with anyone.

    Hi there,

We’re Paul and Rosemary Nankivell, farmers from the Liverpool Plains in NSW, and we’re writing to invite you to the Harvest Festival against the Shenhua coal mine.

Our family has farmed in this district since 1926 but now our livelihoods are under threat. Shenhua, a Chinese owned mega coal company has plans to dig a 35 square kilometre void just up the road from our property.

Out here on the Plains we aren’t going to stand idly by. That’s why our community has organised the Harvest Festival – to celebrate this great region and show Shenhua and the NSW Government that Australians from all walks of life won’t let this destructive project go ahead.

Will you join us from November 68th?

Farming and Shenhua’s coal mine cannot co-exist.

The Liverpool Plains is highly regarded by the agricultural community as one of the top ten most productive agricultural regions in the world. Yet Shenhua and the NSW Government are too concerned about the promise of profits (and even that’s in serious doubt) to consider the damage to surrounding crops and livestock as well as our communities and the climate. What’s more – the impacts on the precious groundwater of the Murray Darling Basin are basically unknown.

That’s why we are inviting folks from across Australia to join us at the Harvest Festival. We’ll take you on tours of the region, talk about how we can work together in the cities and on the Plains to fight this project and demonstrate that enough is enough, this project must be halted for the future of our climate and our communities.

We will defend our country for as long as it takes. And we hope you will join us.

Register today to receive all the details about the Harvest Festival from 6-8 November out here at Breeza, on the Liverpool Plains.

In the words of our youngest son “C’mon….coal is so last century!”

    See you on the Plains,

    Rosemary and Paul.

    to me

Environment Minister Greg Hunt has re-approved mining giant Adani’s Carmichael coal mine, and it’s worse than we ever imagined.

Hidden in the approval document is a bombshell that hands Adani the power to change its plans without approval from the Minister.1

This is madness, NEVILLE. Greg Hunt is letting a company with a proven track record of rampant environmental destruction and human rights violations build Australia’s largest coal mine with next to no oversight.

We have to stop this calamity going ahead. For the Great Barrier Reef, for the climate, for our water, and for the Traditional Owners.

Can you chip in now to fight Adani in court?

Our original email is below in case you missed it.

    —–

    NEVILLE.

Terrible breaking news — but we have a plan.

Moments ago Greg Hunt re-approved the Carmichael mine, and we need to fight it in court.

Twelve weeks ago GetUp members helped beat the monstrous Carmichael Mine in Federal Court. It was a historic victory that reverberated across the world.

But Greg Hunt has just rushed through a new approval, and Adani has the all-clear to build one of the biggest coal mines in the world.

This coal mine will devastate our climate, our Great Barrier Reef, and our economy. The mine will spew out more carbon pollution than all the cars, planes and trains in Australia combined.

It will drain 12 billion litres of precious groundwater. It will be built without the free, prior, and informed consent of the Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners. It will hold back our economy and lock us into a dirty, polluting, out-of-date mine when the rest of the world is moving on.

Can you help fight this hideous, destructive mine in court? https://www.getup.org.au/carmichael

This is a dumb, cowardly approval, but we had an awful feeling it would happen. So we’ve been working behind the scenes with lawyers and experts to examine it closely. They say a case against the approval could have strong prospects of success.

We’re still working with our movement partners to decide exactly which litigant will take the case, and who will play which roles — we’ll keep you posted with every update. It’s likely we’ll be supporting both environment lawyers and conservation groups, like we did with the Mackay Conservation Group challenging the mine the first time.

But we can only make it happen if we have enough money to afford the huge amount of research, barristers and legal fees we need to fight the coal giant’s mine in court.

We’re confident this can be a strong legal challenge. But if for any reason the case doesn’t get off the ground, we’ll offer you a full refund.

Every contribution gets us closer to raising what we need to finish this godforsaken project once and for all.

We’ve done it before and we can do it again. Can you help us fight Adani in court?

    Let’s do this: https://www.getup.org.au/carmichael

For the climate. For the Reef. For our future.

Sam R and Adam, for the GetUp team

PS – GetUp has a strong history of taking on huge targets in court, and winning. In 2010, GetUp made a High Court challenge that helped get 100,000 young people enrolled to vote. Last year, 14,000 GetUp members chipped-in to fight off Greg Hunt’s Abbot Point coal teminal approval, twice. Let’s do it again: https://www.getup.org.au/carmichael
