Eroded beaches facing king tides threat

Updated 6 hours 29 minutes ago

Authorities are hoping tonight’s king tides do not hamper restoration efforts on south-east Queensland beaches.

A series of severe weather events since January have damaged beach infrastructure and washed away metres of sand on the Gold and Sunshine coasts.

Emergency repairs are being made at Surfers Paradise and a major sand pumping and replenishment program began last week at Maroochydore in a bid to restore the beaches for the winter tourist season.

Bulldozers are also being used to help rebuild the beaches.

Tonight the Gold and Sunshine coasts will experience the biggest king tides of the year.

Authorities will monitor the effects and hope they will not hinder restoration efforts or cause further erosion.

Tonight’s king tides are expected to reach 1.9 metres on the Gold Coast and more than two metres on the Sunshine Coast.
