University O-Weeks are happening all around the country this week.
After visiting ANU yesterday, I know most students want to be thinking about getting back into class and enjoying being back on campus. For students just starting out, it’s an exciting time.
The last thing any of these students should have to plan for this week is the possibility of a $100,000 dollar debt at the end of their degree.
But Mr Turnbull has so many students around the country worrying about just that. Many students are seriously considering if they’ll even be able to afford their degree if the Coalition are re-elected this year.
While the Liberal-Nationals delayed their plans for $100,000 degrees last year, they have by no means dropped them and Mr Turnbull is pushing ahead with uni fee deregulation.
This means students could be left with a debt sentence for the rest of their working lives. Labor believes access to education should be based on needs, not how much you can afford.
That’s why I’m standing with students like Jill to call on Mr Turnbull to drop his plans for $100,000 degrees once and for all — because a degree shouldn’t be a debt sentence.
We need to let everyone know that students still don’t want this unfair plan.

We’re the only party so far that’s laid out our positive plans for higher education that would see 20,000 more graduates from 2020 onwards and further investment in the skills of the future.
