National Geothermal Data System Launch

In support of the Obama Administration’s Open Data Policy, on May 28, 2014, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) announced the launch of the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS), an online, open-source platform that facilitates discovery and use of subsurface geothermal data for research and energy production. This nearly $30 million Energy Department investment responds to one of industry’s greatest barriers to geothermal development and deployment:  the difficulty in accessing and integrating quantifiable, technical data in digital format. Already, industry is using the free, online tool to model geological features and locate and monitor subsurface reservoirs. The announcement was made at the White House Energy Datapalooza in Washington, DC by Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.
