The Prime Minister of Peru has a bill on his desk that would turn one of the most precious corners of the Amazon into a National Park — he just needs to sign it. Every hour he doesn’t sign it, this treasured piece of land is being destroyed. Let’s ask him to be the superhero we need and save Peru’s Sierra del Divisor:

SIGN NOW

Dear friends,

There’s a beautiful, far-flung piece of the Amazonian rainforest in Peru under threat — vast swathes of untouched land home to dozens of very rare species are at risk of being destroyed by illegal coca growers and loggers. But with a stroke of his pen, the Peruvian Prime Minister could turn it into a National Park and save it.

This is Prime Minister Cateriano’s moment to become a global conservation superhero. Peruvian activists are telling Avaaz that he’s considering it — but promoters of illegal activities are not standing idly by. If he takes this stand against them, it would be the kind of story of leadership and courage that inspires the world to protect the planet and echoes down the generations. But it’s up to us to make sure he knows that.

To flood him with truly massive support and encouragement he needs, we need Avaazers to sign the petition, but we also need to spread the word wider. If all of us sign and get just 2 friends to sign too, together we could reach an astounding 3% of all of the world’s Internet users!!  That’s the scale we need to show him the support he has behind him.

Click to sign the petition and share it on Facebook, Twitter, email, everywhere…

Sierra del Divisor is a unique part of the Amazon. It’s home to many indigenous Peruvian communities, and one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. But time is running out. Illegal loggers, gold miners and coca growers continue to destroy it every hour the government doesn’t pass the bill. We’re almost there: since 2006, there has been a joint effort of activists, indigenous communities, government and the private sector to make Sierra del Divisor a protected area.  Now is the time to push the  Peruvian Government to just do it!

Some might say that making Sierra del Divisor a National Park will not be enough to stop illegal loggers and miners. National Park designation however, is like turning on a tap, and once you turn the handle, it gushes out manpower, financial resources, stricter regulations and inspections.

So we truly can save Sierra del Divisor — and if we succeed at helping Prime Minister Cateriano find his inspiration to do it, it would be one of history’s most inspiring stories of global people power joining forces with a courageous leader to protect our planet. But it needs all of us joining, and getting our friends to join too – click to sign and share the petition everywhere:

The Avaaz community has stood up time and again to protect the planet – last year tens of thousands of us donated and we raised enough to buy and protect a piece of land where many of the world’s remaining orangutans live. And just a few weeks ago, we raised enough to run a massive global campaign to protect the Brazilian Amazon. Our movement is powerful, and right now we can stand up for Sierra del Divisor and win.

With hope and determination,

Riccardo, Mia, Oscar, Alice and the whole Avaaz team.
