A great nation thinks of his enemy as the shadow that he himself casts

    Lao Tzu

Last week’s quote on The continual destruction of Western culture…… was mistakenly attributed to Emily Spence – for which I apologise.

When was the last time an insect was flattened against your car windscreen?

Where have all the insects gone?

When they returned to one of their earliest trapping sites from 1989, the total mass of their catch had fallen by nearly 80%. In the next year the numbers were just as low. Flies—important pollinators often mistaken for bees—show a particularly steep decline. In 1989, the group’s traps in one reserve collected 17,291 flies from 143 species. In 2014, at the same locations, they found only 2,737 individuals from 104 species.

Climate Change Is Claiming yet Another Victim

Climate change is disrupting the seasonal clock of nine species of North American migratory songbirds, reducing their dwindling numbers due to an inability to successfully breed.  Birds are arriving either too soon and being met with frigid temperatures or too late and missing out on the insect boom that coincides with the new plant growth. Either condition means the birds have a much lower chance of surviving and reproducing.

‘The great unknown’: New climate change data lifts the sea-level threat

Our worst case scenario is now looking three times worse than it did previously, With ‘business as usual emissions, the questions are when, rather than if, we will cross a two-metre sea-level rise. The newest studies indicate a two-metre rise by 2100 “would be the more conservative estimate”.

Rapid greening of Antarctic Peninsula driven by climate change

China’s Silk Road project: A trap or an opportunity?

China’s trading partners are concerned that the new Silk Road project may get them stuck in a ‘debt-trap diplomacy’. As the world’s leading trading nation, the country desperately needs the wheels of globalisation to grind on. Thus, China is willing to commit huge resources to fulfill that outcome.

    The Death of the Republic

The deep state’s decision in ancient Rome—dominated by a bloated military and a corrupt oligarchy, much like the US of 2017—to strangle the vain and idiotic Emperor Commodus in his bath in the year 192 did not halt the growing chaos and precipitous decline of the Roman Empire.  Commodus, like a number of other late Roman emperors, and like President Trump, was incompetent and consumed by his own vanity.  He commissioned innumerable statues of himself as Hercules and had little interest in governance.  He used his position as head of state to make himself the star of his own ongoing public show.  He fought victoriously as a gladiator in the arena in fixed bouts.  Power for Commodus, as it is for Trump, was primarily about catering to his bottomless narcissism, hedonism and lust for wealth.  He sold public offices so the ancient equivalents of Betsy DeVos and Steve Mnuchin could orchestrate a vast kleptocracy.

    Republican candidate ‘body-slamms’ Guardian reporter

Earlier this week, Guardian US political reporter Ben Jacobs tried to talk to Greg Gianforte, a Trump-backed tech millionaire running for Congress in a hotly contested special election in Montana, about healthcare policy. That conversation ended when Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck, slammed him to the ground and punched him. Jacobs left the scene in an ambulance. America’s Secret Planned Conquest of Russia

The US government’s plan to conquer Russia is based upon the belief that “Russia has approximately 3,500 strategic nuclear warheads today, but if the US struck before Russian forces were alerted, Russia would be lucky if a half-dozen warheads survived.”  America’s strategy, ever since 1990, has been to strip Russia of allies and friends — to leave Russia increasingly isolated and surrounded by enemies.

Making Sense of the “Super Fuse” Scare

There is SO much redundancy and security built into the Russian and American strategic nuclear forces that a disarming first strike is all but impossible, even if we make the most unlikely and far-fetched assumptions giving one side all the advantages and the other all the disadvantages. Both the US and Russia have run hundreds and even thousands of very advanced simulations of nuclear exchanges, spending countless hours and millions of dollars trying to find a weak spot in the other guy’s system, and each time the result was the same: there is always enough to inflict an absolutely cataclysmic retaliatory counter-strike.

US-Qatar Deal Threatens Russia: Reading News Between the Lines

The AN/FPS-132 system is designed to detect missile launches that take place thousands of miles away. This highly reliable radar will operate 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, providing up to 360 degrees of coverage out to 5,000km. The US-Qatar deal is a demonstration of US adamant resolve to surround the Russian Federation with BMD sites and neutralize its capability to deliver a retaliatory strike if attacked. This is a very disturbing fact. Russia will not sit idle watching the developments. The US has just taken another provocative step to undermine Russia’s security and complicate the bilateral relations.

Summing Up Russia’s Real Nuclear Fears

For the first time in almost 50 years, the US stands on the verge of attaining nuclear primacy. It will probably soon be possible for the US to destroy the long-range nuclear arsenals of Russia or China with a first strike. . . . Unless they reverse course rapidly, Russia’s vulnerability will only increase over time. Washington’s pursuit of nuclear primacy helps explain its missile defense strategy.

Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had ever happened

    Winston Churchill

It is in the region of ignorance that tyranny begins

    Benjamin Franklin

There is almost no discussion of Israel’s nuclear cruise missiles on three submarines stationed off the coast of Iran. They patrol 24-7, and they can reach any target in Iran in a matter of minutes.

    Jerry Kroth

Consider the consequences of the following three reports, three among many. A three-fold improvement in nuclear missile accuracy combined with newly-installed and effective US anti-missile batteries on the Russian and Chinese borders. With early warning satellites the US would have a 30 minute warning of a launch whereas  the others cannot do better than 15 minutes.

This poses an unparalleled threat to the integrity of Russia and China. It has given the US the capacity to annihilate them both with some expectation (as yet unproven) of minimal retaliation.

Will the US make a first strike, or manage to keep the possibility just as a threat? If a threat, the most obvious demand backed by that threat would be “Get rid of your non-dollar currency or we will ….”. This is the one development in these countries that is most capable of undermining US hegemony.

For the threat to work there would need to be a demonstration to prove that the threat was credible. I would expect the US to find a way to provoke the Russians or Chinese to fire a few missiles and then show they can knock them down. Once demonstrated beyond dispute, the US could then demand the submission of both countries from an unassailable position.

The problem with this scenario is that the demonstration could easily escalate into war as both or either of the ‘enemy’ countries find they could not submit and still survive.

Why America’s New Nuke Upgrades Would Be An Endgame For Russia

A new “super-fuze” device incorporated into submarine-launched ballistic missile warheads are so deadly and accurate that they could possibly wipe out an entire fleet of Russian ICBMs in their silos, creating a preemptive strike-first capability that would give Russia little time to respond.

America’s Top Scientists Confirm: US Goal Now Is to Conquer Russia

“Disarming Enemies with a Surprise Nuclear First Strike”. The key turning-point that led to the present crisis was the gradual and increasing acceptance, on the American side, of the concept of using nuclear weapons for conquest instead of only for deterrence. The US nuclear forces modernization program has been portrayed to the public as an effort to ensure the reliability and safety of warheads, rather than to enhance their military capabilities. In reality, however, that program has implemented revolutionary technologies that will vastly increase the targeting capability of the ballistic missile. This increase is astonishing — boosting the overall killing power of existing US ballistic missile forces by a factor of roughly three — and it creates exactly what one would expect to see, if a nuclear-armed state were planning the capacity to fight and win a nuclear war by disarming enemies with a surprise first strike.

And if that threat is not enough, what of methane?

Methane rising, and its not yet summer in the northern Hemisphere

The lower chart shows the inexorable increase in global atmospheric methane levels. The two diagrams in the upper chart show the consequences in which the increased RATE of methane discharge is obvious in the red line. On the left a normal linear scale has been applied that shows that now that the rate has accelerated a linear view of future growth cannot be maintained. On the right Sam Carara has connected the points with a polynomial curve that suggests that we are in for an acceleration of the rate of acceleration itself. The doomsday scenarios issued by scientific bodies that foretell 4C within the next 15 years to some extent reflect this interpretation.

The great British Brexit robbery: how our democracy was hijacked

A shadowy global operation involving big data and billionaire friends of Trump and May. There are three strands to this story. How the foundations of an authoritarian surveillance state are being laid in the US. How British democracy was subverted through a covert, far-reaching plan of coordination enabled by a US billionaire. And how we are in the midst of a massive land grab for power by billionaires via our data. Data which is being silently amassed, harvested and stored. Whoever owns this data owns the future. The Brexit campaign was a military contractor using military strategies on a civilian population. Us.  The documents throw light on a significant and under-reported aspect of the Trump administration. Conservationists plan expedition to secret ‘Noah’s Ark’ in Sumatra

After photographing tigers and tapirs in one of Sumatra’s least known wildernesses, conservationists are hoping to discover a hidden population of orangutans in high altitude forests. Sumatra has changed remarkably in the last few decades, from an island of villages and wilderness to one of vast monoculture plantations of pulp and paper and palm oil. Since 1985 the island has lost more than half its lowland forest, and it continues to have one of the highest deforestation rates on the planet. Its large mammals – many of which are found nowhere else in the world – have undergone a severe contraction, leaving them at risk of total extinction.

Big Pharma’s Pollution Is Creating Deadly Superbugs

A major study published Saturday in the prestigious scientific journal Infection found “excessively high” levels of antibiotic and antifungal drug residue in water sources in and around a major drug production hub in Hyderabad, as well as high levels of bacteria and fungi resistant to those drugs. The presence of drug residues in the natural environment allows the microbes living there to build up resistance to the ingredients in the medicines that are supposed to kill them, turning them into superbugs. The resistant microbes travel easily and have multiplied in huge numbers all over the world, creating a grave public health emergency

Some ten years ago, myself and my friend Pietro Cambi had the weird idea of “retrofitting” Pietro’s old Fiat 500, turning it into an electric car. So, we put this idea into practice in 2007 and it worked. It was, actually, rather easy. An electric car is so much simpler than a car powered by a combustion engine.

But you may get a free trip with your morning coffee. Transport-As-A-Service will use only electric vehicles and will upend two trillion-dollar industries. It’s the death spiral for cars. A major new report predicts that by 2030, the overwhelming majority of consumers will no longer own a car – instead they will use on-demand electric autonomous vehicles. And 95% of all passenger miles traveled will be served by on-demand, autonomous, electric vehicles that will be owned by fleets rather than individuals.

The great British Brexit robbery: how our democracy was hijacked

It also reveals a critical and gaping hole in the political debate in Britain. Because what is happening in America and what is happening in Britain are entwined. Brexit and Trump are entwined. The Trump administration’s links to Russia and Britain are entwined. And Cambridge Analytica is one point of focus through which we can see all these relationships in play; it also reveals the elephant in the room as we hurtle into a general election: Britain tying its future to an America that is being remade – in a radical and alarming way – by Trump.

Future World Economic Growth In Big Trouble As Oil Discoveries Fall To Historic Lows

global oil discoveries have been much lower than production for quite some time.  The IEA also stated that the amount of world conventional oil discoveries averaged about 9 billion barrels for the past 15 years.  If we assume that the world was producing 65 mbd of “conventional oil” for the past 15 years (it was likely higher), the world was only replacing about 38% of its annual oil consumption.

”Being President is more work than in my previous life; I thought it would be easier”

After Trump confessed to Reuters that he thought being president would be “easier” than it is, Twitter blew up with aghast responses from voters, people in politics and at least one former head of state, who pleaded with the president to please quit the White House and just stick to golf. Tweets from David Frum, George W. Bush’s speechwriter:

THE IMPENDING THREAT OF NUCLEAR WAR AND THE REASON

    America’s Financial Strategy

The geopolitics and economics behind America’s war strategy from China’s perspective, concludes it is entering its final phase. China’s exit plan appears to tie the pricing of energy and then other major commodities to gold, returning to the pre-1971 status quo, when the dollar was just a settlement link between commodity prices and gold. Except this time, the dollar itself will be side-lined, so far as China is concerned.

Since the dollar’s peg to the gold price was abandoned, America has initiated a cycle of economic boom and bust among foreign users of the dollar for its own benefit. America’s wealth is sustained by a pump-and-dump operation facilitated by the dollar’s reserve status, replacing genuine industrial production.

The end game for the dollar and America’s harvesting of foreign countries is in sight, and it will likely end with a final dollar crisis. China could bring this about at a time of its own choosing, simply by introducing the planned oil futures yuan contract alongside the gold futures yuan contract. When liquid enough, oil producers will be able to sell oil for gold, effectively restoring the pre-1971 price relationships.

This explains the dynamics being played out at the highest levels, and America has the most to lose. Because China still owns large quantities of US Treasuries and dollar reserves she might prefer more time before executing the coup de grace. But execute it, she will. Her fundamental objective is to remove America’s ability to profit from having everything priced in dollars.

    http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/46961.htm

Washington Plans to Nuke Russia and China

Both written documents and changes in US war doctrine that indicate that Washington is preparing a preemptive nuclear attack on Russia and China. Washington’s demonization of Russia and President Putin, the incessant lies about Russian deeds and intentions, and the refusal of Washington to cooperate with Russia on any issue have convinced the Russian government that Washington is preparing the Western populations for an attack on Russia. China has come to the same conclusion.

US missile shield aims to cover sudden nuclear strike against Russia

American missile attack warning systems cover all possible trajectories of Russian ballistic missiles flying toward the US. These systems are not only creating an “illusion” of safety from a retaliatory strike but can themselves be used to launch a sneak nuclear attack.

    https://www.rt.com/news/386276-us-missile-shield-russia-strike

Is North Korea a Diversion for a US-Jordan Invasion of Syria?

The US is not going to launch a preemptive attack on North Korea.  The risks far outweigh the rewards and, besides, the US has no intention of getting bogged down in a conflict that doesn’t advance its geopolitical objectives. The saber-rattling is just an attempt to divert attention from the Syria-Jordan border where the US and Jordan are massing troops and equipment for an invasion of Syria.

    http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/46984.htm

What the N. Korean “Crisis” Is Really About

The Chinese leadership understands that the reason for the North Korean “crisis” is to provide cover for Washington to put anti-ballistic missile sites near China’s border, to create a shield against nuclear retaliation from both Russia and China from a US nuclear strike against both countries. It is part of Washington’s preparations to nuke both Russia and China with minimal consequence to the US, although Europe would certainly be completely destroyed as anti-ABMs are useless against Russian nuclear cruise missiles and the Russian air force. But no Empire has ever cared about the fate of its vessels,

    Empire of African Bases

What has changed is Washington’s attitude toward the public record.  Its latest basing moves are taking place enveloped in a blanket of secrecy, which means that even if you want to know, it’s increasingly tough to find out.  Washington’s latest garrisoning strategy is based on a new premise: a “small footprint,” meaning a tiny-bases, rapid-deployment, special-ops and drone-heavy way of war that’s being put into place across Africa.

You don’t have to be an expert on dangerousness or spend fifty years studying it like I have in order to know how dangerous this man is.” Dr Gartner has called for Trump to be removed from office as he is “psychologically incapable of competently discharging the duties of President”. Duty to Warn, which consists of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers, signed an open letter warning that his mental state “makes him incapable of serving safely as president” with his tendency to “distort reality” to fit his “personal myth of greatness” and attack those who challenge him. In about the last 100,000 years, there have been 23 abrupt temperature changes in Greenland ice cores. In those moments, the temperature abruptly jumped or fell 9 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit across the planet and 25 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit in Greenland. The changes typically took decades to generations, but at their most extreme, they only took two to three years. Published consensus statements on climate change do not factor in abrupt change — an omission that seriously affects how climate policy is made. As recently as the 1990s, it took the mountain pine bark beetle two years to raise a family. But today, summer is two-thirds longer than it was; spring and fall come a month sooner and later. It is so warm that the beetle can go through two life cycles a year, radically increasing the number on the attack. These little beetles are about the size of a grain of rice; up to 10,000 beetles can attack a single tree. Since the turn of the century, the beetles have multiplied so quickly that they’ve killed 60 to 90% of 89 million acres of forest. This is 20% of western North American forests. That’s fast!

The Permafrost is Thawing 20% Faster Than Previously Thought

Vast thawed lands are starting to release carbon dioxide and methane. Thermokarst lakes bubble with the stuff. And pingos are now starting to erupt as the ice relinquishes the soils of Siberia.

The Russian state is highly criminalised, and the interpenetration of the criminal ‘underworld’ and the political ‘upperworld’ has led the regime to use criminals from time to time as instruments of its rule.

Trump Is Hiring Lobbyists: “There’s No Transparency”

Trump has stocked his administration with a small army of former lobbyists and corporate consultants who are now in the vanguard of the effort to roll back government regulations at the agencies they once sought to influence. Only possibly by weakening ethics rules.

Abrupt glacier melt causes Canadian river to vanish in four days

High average temperatures in the first three months of 2016 caused a dramatic spike in the amount of meltwater flowing from the Kaskawulsh glacier, carving a deep canyon in the ice and redirecting the flow toward the Alsek River in the south, rather than the north-flowing Slims River. That changed the Slims River from a three-metre-deep, raging torrent to a place where “massive afternoon dust storms occurred almost daily”

Wilder Fires and Rising Waters, Climate Impacts America

Pair of new studies show how climate refugees will ‘reshape’ population landscape of the nation. The idea of a person becoming a climate change refugee seems too foreign for most people.

    Don’t Poison Yourself: A Warning

It kills the honey bees and other pollinators as it enters their bodies through their pollinating and gathering nectar. They get something comparable to Alzheimer’s and can’t make it back to the hive since their brains get confused from the toxin. Instead they just fly around aimlessly and, eventually, die while grounded, and while aimlessly kicking legs  and shaking across their bodies from nerve damage as their brains eventually shut-off from the chemical assault.

Syria: Secret campaign of mass hangings and extermination at Saydnaya Prison

A chilling new report by Amnesty International exposes the Syrian government’s calculated campaign of extrajudicial executions by mass hangings at Saydnaya Prison. Between 2011 and 2015, every week and often twice a week, groups of up to 50 people were taken out of their prison cells and hanged to death. In five years, as many as 13,000 people, most of them civilians believed to be opposed to the government,

    Trump: The Hunger President

Trump famously changed his policy on Syria after seeing photographs of a couple Syrian children killed by a chemical attack. In targeting the Assad regime, Trump was moved by the tragedy, not the statistic. When it comes to world hunger, Trump’s resistance to statistics is even more appalling. There are now 1.4 million children at risk of dying from famine. No one apparently has shown Donald Trump, or his daughter Ivanka, any photos of these at-risk children. So, the president is comfortably ignoring this statistic.
