to me

Dear Neville,

This. Is. Huge.

Thanks to your hard work, the Commonwealth Bank has just ruled out involvement in the Galilee Basin mega coal mines and Abbot Point port expansion on the Great Barrier Reef!

Last night, CommBank publicly confirmed that they have ended their involvement with Indian mining giant Adani and are no longer advising the Galilee Basin coal proposals. [1]

This huge victory is thanks to dozens of community groups and individuals who have run bold and creative actions at CommBank branches across the country and the thousands of people that have put the bank on notice, closed their accounts and taken action online.

To everyone that has had a hand in this success – a massive THANK YOU.

We’ve known for some time that Galilee coal is ‘unbankable’ and now Adani and its ill-fated project is ‘bankless’, with CommBank being the 12th major financer to rule out the project.

But of course the fight is not over yet. This victory gives us a unique opportunity to call on CommBank to get out of all fossil fuels, but also to call on all of the major Australian banks to rule out support for this destructive coal proposal.

Next week, we’ll pay a visit to CommBank branches to deliver messages of congratulations and call on them to take the next big step in giving all fossil fuels the flick. Signup to join a fun and family friendly action near you.

These actions will be a celebration of what we have just achieved and an opportunity for us to launch a new fossil free vision for CommBank. Signup today to join your community at a CommBank action next week.

CommBank’s announcement confirms that when we stand together and challenge powerful corporations with smart, bold and creative actions, we can achieve great things.

That’s why next week, we will continue to show CommBank that the community expects Australia’s largest bank to be a leader on climate action and develop a plan to get out of all fossil fuels.

For now though, we hope you will all join us in celebrating this fantastic community achievement.

Yours with a smile,

Josh on behalf of the 350.org Australia team.

P.s Can’t make it to an action next week? Click here to send a message to Australia’s other big 3 banks – Westpac, ANZ and NAB telling them it’s time to publicly rule out Galilee Coal as well.
